Thought about posting this in techy section but there seems enough interest to put it in general.

Upgrade from an existing licence (i.e. Vista) - £79.99.
Full licence, which can be installed on any computer - £149.99
If you buy a PC from mid July onwards with Vista, it entitles you to a free full upgrade to 7 on release.

Some hoo-haa though over the upgrades, about Microsoft not doing upgrades from previous OS's in Europe, but I don't understand why, if that's the case, they're releasing the above price to do just that.

Its been a while since I've actually bought an OS by itself - are those RRP's and will actually be quite a bit cheaper, or is that just how much they'll cost fullstop?

Except it's not just like Vista is it :)
Vista, for a start, won't run on a P2 266 with 96mb of ram :)

Never actually bought an OS (the shame I know!) Will be buying Windows 7 though, probably the Ultimate version.

In other news after April next year there will no more XP downgrade route it will be 7 or Vista.

And 7 is nothing like Vista anyone who had run it they would see that it has improved lots.

I'm starting to really like Vista to be honest with you. Stable as fook, quick (on this machine anyway, C2D P7350, 4Gb RAM, laptop tho) and doesn't seem to degenerate over time like XP did.

I'm with Bodhi, I got into Vista quite late on (post SP1) and i'm finding it very, very good - leaps and bounds better than XP.

100% agree with Bodlar.

God the XP thing where it got worse over time, I forgot about that. I do like Vista, I have 32bit on the lappy and its spot on and I have 64bit on the main pc and it is also spot.

Paying for an OS ?

This XP installation (actually I'm on Eeebuntu live CD on my desktop atm but nvm) happened when piracy was easy and I've not touched it since. To be honest it's a broken install that barely recognises USB now. I could do with a new OS but #150 ? I'm not in the market for a new PC to get OEM install.

Or he could be a Linux user.
Well I dismissed that given that this is a gaming forum and he's a games software programmer. Linux isn't the most efficient choice for gaming by any stretch of the imagination.

usually you dont have to buy a whole pc for oem .. can buy a ten quid cd player with it and get the oem :)

But you still have to pay for the OEM software. I could just get it from eBay. I meant if I purchased a new PC I'd get the OS for 'free'.

Vista 64 is the first OS I have bought and since it's been fine for me so far I doubt I'll shell out on 7 at all.

As I only paid for vista under 2 years ago and it works, I doubt I will pay anything over £30 for win 7. If I still used XP I would have paid more.
