This came up in a news bulletin at work basically because SWAP are going to campaign against the Bank of Scotland because of some business banking loan related to the porn business. After reading their website, I think "what a bunch of ugly femenistic women with shaved heads and haven't had sex in a very long time".

I'm as straight as the next man, and like the majority of men that have walked on earth, i think sex is great and pornography is ... very interesting.

But after reading their website, that suddenly makes me at risk of being a sexually violent person and potential child molester? wtf?

What a crock of shit.

Well, after looking beyond the first page there is actually some sensible-ish stuff here. I have absolutely no problem with porn - I think it's fine. However, what I get foaminthemouth pissed off about is the media's objectification of women - it's everywhere. If you watch a porno, you're expecting to see sex/nudity all of that sort of thing. The problem lies in the fact that it's everywhere else. The UK isn't as bad as the States in this respect but when watching TV you don't see very many normal looking women - there's far more good looking women (well, what the media tells us is good looking, it's all down to personal preference really isn't it) than you would see in real life. You've got magazines - not only lads mags, but cosmo etc. telling women that this is how they should look. Sure lads mags have good looking men in the clothes section, but it's far less intrusive.

I'm not a woman so I can't tell how much this affects womens self image, but I can't help but think it would hardwire the belief that this is how they should look. Maybe some of the female-freddys could let us know what being exposed to all this stuff is like.

What I dislike about the above link is that it suggests that pornography is bad, fullstop. It also lumps together a lot of nasty aspects of porn - dodgy porn, with the more normal "healthy" porn. This is a nice way of saying all porn is bad, instead of looking at what perhaps is the real situation - there's a lot of fuckedupedness in porn, a lot of dodgy stuff that shouldn't be going on, but that doesn't mean you write off the entire industry. There's a place for porn in this society and I don't think it's necessarily harmful/damaging.

I'm not really sure what they are campaigning for - they mention kiddie porn but this has been illegal forever so not sure what more can be done - as to the rest you get the feeling that they would ban the old masters oil paintings of reclining women popular in the renaissance - givf censorship!

The fact that countries that have a lot less control of porn like scandanavia have less violence to women seems to have escaped them...

Just read nath's post, didn't expect this kind of opinion to come from a bloke!

I must say that (especially suffering from a post-partum completely ruined figure plus low body image/self esteem) I now refuse to look at men's mags, as they utterly depress me. Even women's mags are a no-no - how many men do you see on their front pages?

That's what I was thinking. Jill Kelly and Jenna Jameson (not that i know who they are .. er .. 'i know a mate' who told me their names ... er ... ) who run their own production companies now (so it's women running the show) and certainly look like they are absolutely rolling in it.
