Nah compared to his better work it's poor. Story and characters are weak. Nothing grabs and beguilles like it does in things like Ubik.

Meh. I'm really enjoying it. May be just a personal thing with this book?

It did win a Hugo after all ;)

Never really rated it. Me and Wij had a discussion about it earlier in this very thread I seem to remember.

I just finished The Scar. Apparently it was adapted from Russian. Not the greatest story in the world, but I did think the prose were very good.

But apparently they've pushed the publish date forward ANOTHER year. I'm close to done with this.

Yeah, Amazon are now saying Summer 2013. I'm going to ignore this from now on; if it happens, it happens, but Scott Lynch's personal problems make it increasingly unlikely. I'm more annoyed that Amazon keep listing it and giving definitive release dates that they seem to pull out of their arse (its not the publisher doing it - I checked).

I didn't know Lynch had personal problems to be honest. Just had a look into it. Yikes.

I too am waiting :( Fantastic books, would be a shame to see them incomplete.

http://speculativehorizons.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03/scott-lynch-reveals-reason-for-delay.html

I'm reading The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie at the moment - though pretty intermittent as work is busy and I can only fit so many things into my life. And apparently fluffing on the internet is one of the most important. Its good, though I don't feel like it's standing out as incredible or something I haven't seen before at the moment (1/3 through).

Just finished the last George R R Martin after waiting for it for absolutely years (after waiting for Feast for Crows for years and years). Loved it, though so many hanging threads and now I have to wait for more years. I think the TV series is Ok, but its nothing on the books - and it makes me rage at all the people who read the books after watching the TV series and _don't_ get it like I do after starting to read them 10 years ago :X3:

Anyone else read Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series ? Really great series. I haven't read the last book yet. Though starting to wonder if he should quit whilst he's ahead and wrap things up a little.

Oh, I read the Scar and Perdido Street Station by China Mieville a long time ago..

.. I could never decide if I liked them or not.

I could never get completely attached to any of the 'hero' characters like I do in other books, and sometimes it just seemed like he was being fucked up for the sake of it.

Are the Peter F Hamilton books good ? Where should I start ? :)

I really like the Peter Hamilton stuff. He always builds a "believable" tech back story to reach the future point the book is set in. The Nights Dawn series is a good start, or the Void Trilogy.

I'd say it's the best series I've ever read, and he has wrapped it up.

i agree, it is an incredible series and I felt he tied up most of the threads with TCG. Read his new book-Forge of Darkness the other week, very interesting read but makes a fuck ton of questions to be answered. Also felt a lot darker and more philosophising .

Just finished reading Hotel Kerobokan, must say I quite enjoyed it. If I end up in there, I'm looking to you, TdC, to come break me out. There's a good lad.

Just started reading Tickling The English by Dara O'Briain:

As I'm reading it I'm hearing Dara's voice in my head. lol

Really ? :( I read Magician et al religiously a long time ago when I was younger and loved them all - have read some of the other Feist's more recently in the past few years and liked them, but I suppose they weren't quite the same, not quite as deep as I remember thinking when I was a kid.

I loved his books but yeah they are a bit childish at times. I think he has one more till its finished so will complete the series. I found some characters such as Tomas, Macros and Nakor were amazing!

If that happens I'll have my people call your people :)

I'm *really* picky about my fantasy (and scifi). Riftwar is too easy (for the characters). In fact, imo the only worthwhile char in all of the books is....

Fatherland, Robert Harris

A dead-easy-to-read gripping page-turner from the start.

Its 1964. Almost 20 years since Germany won World War 2. One week before Hitler's 75th birthday...a body is found floating in the River. As a police inspector discovers the identity of the body, he uncovers signs of a conspiracy that could go to the very top of the German Reich

You should try the Empire series, beginning with Daughter of the Empire, that REF co wrote with Jany Wurtz. They are probably some of the finest fantasy books ever written.

Ah it's cool I've read all his books...twice!
The daughter of the empire ones are kinda boring. The Tsurani are just basically old school Japanese so the only good parts are when Pug is involved.

A few chapter's in and I'm obsessed with the universe he's created all over again.
