Yet to find a book of his I didn't like. I hate to think how many shrooms he has taken in the past to expand his consciousness!

Actually I've been pretty underwhelmed by his last two; Terminal World didn't really work and Blue Remembered Earth was a bit.. flat. Obviously a setup for a new series but not that interesting in its own right.

I thought terminal world was a good mix of stories

Blue Remembered Earth was a good 'near future' storyline, with nearly all science it in theoretically possible now (with enough money!), which was a change to most of his other stuff which was already 'way' out in the future

I think you might be mixing up Terminal World with Zima Blue. Terminal World is a novel not an anthology.
Yeah my mistake, have not read terminal world, but now waiting for whispermail to deliver to my kindle. Must have missed it moving across the world

Out of interest have many people here come across Charles Stross? He's a talented guy who writes both "funny" sci-fi/fantasy crossover books (his Laundry) series and some seriously hardcore sci-fi as well. He's also a really nice guy who took the time to correspond with me when I had a concept for a novel which I'm waaaaaay too lazy to write. Highly recommended.

New Laundry book out in July (The Apocalypse Codex). I've read most of his stuff by now, Halting State is probably my favourite of his (although I didn't find his follow-up, Rule 34, quite as good).

i could seriously take a cricket bat to nynaeve. fuck me she's annoying. although tbh, most of the central characters could do with a slap.

first read through I got so annoyed with the women that it took great effort to not just skip their chapters. This read is the....3rd and I find myself coming to terms with just finding them mildly irritating :) Only ones I hold in any real regard are Birgitte and Tuon.

That's funny because I've just started to read book and I've been thinking much the same thing. Every time she says something along the lines of "Stupid stubborn men" I feel like screaming "STUBBORN? STUBBORN? YOU ARE THE QUEEN OF HARD HEADEDNESS YOU FUCKING KNOW IT ALL CUNT". But I don't, because the missus already looks at me funny for reading this type of book to begin with.

Seriously though was Robert Jordan actually a feminist or something? It seems like all every woman in these books does is complain about men being stupid.

well the men try to do their best, and the women all think they're idiots while making tonnes of mistakes themselves. bit like real life really :)

Honestly it's mostly Nyneave that annoys me. Also so far I have to say any feelings between her and Lan seem very contrived.

Reading Crime & Punishment by Dostoyevsky, never got around to it before and after reading a bunch of books on ethics I decided to give it a whirl since it's used as an example a lot there, so far so good. Surprised that the language is so "accessible" given its age.

Dostoyevsky is brilliant. Nearly everything he wrote was superb. C+P is great. Most Russian work of that era is surprisingly readable by modern standards. He's certainly easier to read than the overly wordy and descriptive Dickens, for example.

Just finished Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy, Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen. Excellent set of books, really hard to put down when you start. Shame there's no ebook version that I can find though. I prefer proper books, but my kindle is a lot more convenient when going away.

Made a start on the Wheel of time series. Not sure what the fuss is about yet, I will carry on though as so many have said its good.

It doesn't really get going until towards the end of the first book and it doesn't become great until the 2nd. The first 8 books in the series which he wrote in one pretty much continuous 1 book-a-year period are still some of the most fun I've ever had reading, I grew up with them. After his little break he then starts to fall into the same trap a lot of fantasy authors do in popular series and adds in lots of unnecessary characters, tedious plot lines and general filler. /me waves at George R. Martin.
