I've watched the big three - Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Apocalypse Now - since I've started playing BF:Vietnam but I was wondering if people could advise me on some more to watch. I can only think of We Were Soldiers but I've no idea if it's any good or not.

I seem to remember watching 'We were Soldiers', and I quite enjoyed it. (IMDB has it down for 7.2/10)

If you haven't seen it, well worth watching.

How could I forget? "Good Morning, Vietnam!" :p

I thought Platoon was awful tbh, the worst vietnam film I've seen.

Jacobs Ladder is an odd one.

Not a war film in particular, but heavily based around it.

I remember a documentary style movie that wasn't too bad, a quick google didn't turn up the title before I got bored of looking though.

Thats a Brian DePalma film, Casualties of War, its quite melodramatic.

Sean Penn is very good, but the film is a bit average tbh.

And Chuck Norris - ROFL.

The Quiet American is an alright film and losely fits into the criteria and there is also the third part to Oliver Stone's trilogy, Heaven & Earth.

I no it's bad form to quote yourself, but I remembered the name in the middle of the night.

84 Charlie Mopic.

It's pretty good as I remember.

um I personally like Platoon heh. Besides that, Hamburger Hill (don't really like it), Apoc Now (imo it's wank, my mate says it's the best film he's ever seen. what the hey), The Deer Hunter (like it, nearly everyone finds it wank. I love it when they're back in the US, so much for reintegration heh), FMJ (love it, but it goes a bit pear once they get to Nam imo, but it captures the chaos inheirent well), BAT-21 (soso, but I like Gene Hackman. it's soooo shit when charley force the helo pilot to walk into the mine field and the viet man's killing is a profound statement :/), GoodMorning Vietnam (see futility of war in full effect. Robin Williams as Adrian Cronauer - based on a true story). 84CM I found a bit tough, can't remember much of it to comment on.

I don't know if you can find it, but there was a great miniseries about 10-15 years ago - it was Australian; I think it was just called 'Vietnam' and it was excellent.

I know its not a film but a great book is Peter Straub's "Koko" about vietnam , the story goes something about someone killing people in modern day times but its linked to something that happend to some people when they were in 'nam and it flashes back to it here and there , really enjoyed it tbh.

I just remembered, if you can find it, there is an excellent documentary on the making of Apocalypse Now, shot by Coppola's wife. If anyone knows where to buy it, let me know. Its like a film in its own right.

I believe it's called Hearts of Darkness, after the book that inspired the film in the first place.

Dead Presidents is also an excellent film whilst not entirely based in Vietnam, paints a great picture of life after Vietnam. The scenes in Vietnam are quite shocking, the U.S trooper pleading for his own death after being ambushed by VC's is going to take another few years of stoner life to erase from my memory.

We were soldiers was a great film :) Tour of Duty is a good TV series from early 90's late 80's i think.

Tiger Land was also a cool film.

I hear that We were soldiers is full of cheesy American patriotism, I've avoided it for that reason alone.

Black Hawk Down is ok as films go but if you have read the book before you watch it you realise how much it gloss's over the Americans slaughter of the local's which they happily admit to in the book (appreciate the circumstances etc) but it doesnt really get into the slaughter of non-weapon carrying civilians that did occur as they admitted they couldnt identify enemy/civilians apart and so took em all down... Not a bad film though but does cheese it up more than book and i really hoped it wouldnt.

Still anything with Chuck Norris in camo's and a bag of rats and you can't go wrong!
