As I was saying to Jup in irc, my main defensive balloon structure had been snapped in half when I removed them at the weekend. The main suspect is the bird who strolls away when I run at it, it doesn't fly or run it just calmly walks back into the hedge.

The following picture illustrates the snapped structure and how it is almost half the length of the other -
