it depends how you approach it (pvp). if you run a pvp group, and go and TRY to pvp properly (i.e. group v. group fights etc.) it rocks, with their being fewer classes and each one having more utility than daoc (not to mention the aspect of mounts, no pvp-only zones, hence other obstacles) pvp can be really interresting and fun. i just think that most people's pvp 'experience' comes from the tarren mill -> southshore, or vice versa, zerg.. which sucks mightily.

check out random roleplayers' movie for an example of awesome pvp in action.

p.s. i haven't even tried bgs yet as i rerolled :>

PvP is WoW is nothing more than a bolt on, they were making a PvE game and thought near the end "shit we need some PvP" and thats the problem, the game is not designed around PvP so I don't see how it will ever match daoc in that aspect.
You are right, indeed. But can't deny that the Battlegrounds are a huge step in the right direction. Will definitely take a closer look at WoW again soon. Only played up to level 20ish myself a couple days after release, then went back to daoc due to missing rvr.

Battlegrounds are great, only bad point is the waiting que :p Can take up to more than 2-3 hours of waiting time, especially if on a high populated server.

I Played wow for about 4 months (sorta) i had a total of 4 days playing time after 4 months in WoW. Shows how boring it was :D

WoW does not compare to daoc imo, its all noobish - design for people who havent a clue how to play mmorpgs

So im back to daoc, yipee - and let me say im so glad, i missed this game alot

And how the fuck would you know that after 4 days played? You don't have much skills at that kind of level :x I'm guessing you got 20-25, 30 max in that time...

Well, I played it from day one of Euro closed beta and would agree completely with his statement.

There are an awful lot of first time MMORPGers in WoW who really don't have a clue and a lot of self-admitted kids. By kids I mean players between 12 and 16 which gives it a very much different atmosphere to DAoC or even EQLive or EQ2.

I think WoW does appeal to a slightly younger audience and that doesn't necessarily mean they're all immature idiots, there were plenty of them at the older end of the spectrum too :)
But from where I was watching/playing it does tend to result in an online community that's, shall we say, more inclined to arguments and name-calling, as evidenced by a lot of posts on the official forums.

Well,

I terminated my sub to WoW yesterday for several reasons. The game was great fun from levels 1-59 and i loved how i could solo or duo and make meaningful advancement. The instances i took part of while leveling was also fun since i did each of them at most twice.

Then i dinged 60 and the game changed.

Endless PvE instance runs to farm items, noskill greenganking at chillwind/ungoro, or zerg for the win in hillsbrad was all there was to it. I held out for the honor system and battlegrounds. Honor system was eventually implemented and at first it was nice to at least feel you got something out of all the ganking (and few nice fights now and then). Still the chillwind routine was still getting old fast. Then came battlegrounds and at first i thought, "great!", but after a few days i realized the system was very hollow and a cheap substitute for a proper pvp model - as well as beeing massively impractical since we have to spend 30 min to 2 hours between fights in ctf (who often end anyway due to lack of players) and anything from an hour and upwards in queue for alterac (for mostly mindless zerging).
I also realized that if i wanted to keep my pvp rank 10 status i would have to grind and grind honor and wait and wait in queues for alot more time than i was prepared to spend. Nor was there any fights to be had at the old popular pvp spots since most people seemed to prefer dueling in front of the bg entrances while waiting to be let in, and i could only feel pity for the poor bastards exping and didnt want to destroy their experience just so i could scratch togheter a few points.

Nor do i have any desire to repeat the same quest content again with an alt -tried it but no, i joined a pvp server for pvp.

Blizzard droped the ball, i might be back when they pick it up again and present a more mature pvp model. I did love the mechanics of actuall pvp combat though, so i do hope they can somehow fix it so you get more meaningful fights.

^ is why official DAoC forums got closed, they covered it up ^^

And on Fana's post, Alterac Valley could have a lot of potential, but it's zerg 4tw atm, and you can't really run 5 man groups to clear zergs with minimum CC (which is a good thing as there aren't any mezzfights, but kinda makes it almost impossible to show skill vs unskilled as the first thing that happens is you get Pala/Rogue/Warrior/sometimes Hunter stunned then zerged, zerg 4tw), and CTF gets boring in random groups, quite repetive, although it's uber fun with proper players/guild groups, the queue for getting in in one of those is quite annoying. (Tried entering WSG with a 5man group had a 2 hour queue where ETA was 2 mins)

PvP in the outside world hasn't really changed for me, it's still fun ganking in BRM/Steppes/outside IF/Orgri, but it's not where the CP is anymore, which kinda puts the outside PvP to a minimal as your trying to compete maintaining your rank.

WSG needs a major CP nerf, wins/caps and kills all need to be atleast halved, I mean if someone can get aprox 4000 kills and 210k CP in 1 week, whereas before BG's the max on the #1 (on our side) was like 90k, there's something wrong imho.

The big problem with a ladder system rather than a level system like daoc is that in wow you have to work to stand still - if you get to a decent rank and then go on holiday for a couple of weeks youll end up a lower rank...

Working in order just to keep what you got is not motivating - feels too much like actual work to be fun...

Daoc bg is a lot more fun than the wow bg's - ctf tends to be very one sided and 6v10 isnt much fun - Alterac is similar in that the Alliance side can muster a full 40 at all times but the horde barely get enough to start an instance and their numbers gradually fall off as the game progresses.

Plus the big bugbear with BG's is the queues - last week the queue broke on Saturday night and wasnt fixed till wednesdays re-boot - that was fun! ;P

Wow seems to rely a lot on your choice of server and faction, if you chose alliance on some overpopulated server, i can see your frustration with bg's. I play Horde on Deathwing, where the pop is 50-50 so queues aren't long, it's high pop so lots of people around to do instances/quests and bg's at ctf at least are always 10vs10, AV is mostly balanced as well. My experience has been great so far, but i am sure if i played in a 70-30 server it wouldn't be anywhere near that.

Was just looking at the poll results and I had a thought ....
I was in housing area earlier today and I gotta say that its not what I was expecting.
I had thought I would get myself a nice plot near the entrance sinse all these people have left .....
But no ...
Housing seems virtualy unchanged .... even months after the release of WoW.
So I suspect that a lot of people have kept their DAOC accounts up and running and are logging on now and again just to pay their rent.
In that case the situation with DAoC may not be as dire as many of us feel.

Course ... there is a down side to this.
I'm still stuck with a house on the far side of the zone :(

Thoughts people ?

Think most people loaded up a few plats on their CM's in case they didnt come back for a while ;) (money is drawn from the CM in case there isnt any in the lockbox)

I had 2+ years of cash on my CM when I left with items for another 1-2 years.

Still prefer WoW to DAoC though.
Kinda funny to see all the "I don't play wow, but it sucks anyway because..." posts. :p

Yeah I agree that the WoW suxxors DAoC is l33t posts kinda miss the point but I did try WoW and found it not to my tastes.
I aint saying its a bad game .. it just wasn't for me.
Many people may very well think that WoW IS their cup of tea and to be honest I feel absolutley no animosity towards that.
Its each to their own yes?
Yes we can list pro's and con's of both games but its not gonna get us anywhere.
Some people prefer DAoC and some prefer WoW.
Shit its your money ... you pay for what you want.
I personnaly think I will stay with DAoC ....... got a lot of time invsted in this game and although its weird I do feel an attachment to the toons I have created here.
Thats not to say my opinion is right .... its just the way I feel.
To the guys who move on to other games ....I wish you all the best and hope I will see you soon in another MMO.
To the guys who stay in DAoC ... hello, how are you ... lets get it on :)

i was very disapointed with WoW. VERY disappointed. played my mage up to level 60.. and yeah.. great stuff.. and for a couple weeks after that getting nice gear.. great.. then.. there's nothing. absolutely nothing. level an alt maybes.. hmm.. yeah, give that a go.. but still nothing at end..

wow is a great game for pve peeps dont get me wrong.. BEAUTIFUL graphics.. some lovely touches with the emotes ( female gnomes going choo-choo chuggy-chuggy-chuggy woo-woo! whenever they typed /train hehe), some nice quests.. but..

servers blow up (esp Bloodhoof) more times than Kenny off South Park.. LOADS of the high level quests are bugged, zones aint even finished, the lag in the AH cities is ridiculous.. and more importantly..

the pvp has obviously just been stuck on as an afterthought. it doesnt make any sense whatsoever. when there's a fight to be had.. yeah works.. but there simply isnt a reason to fight. and thats where DaoC wins every single time.. u level for a reason, u get stuff for a reason.. defend your realm and fight together :)

many MANY who played DaoC prior to playing WoW are finding WoW seriously lacking in the pvp department and are returning to DaoC - myself included. with the current system that blizzard have with the rankings for persistent pvp.. i reckon more will return as well.. esp since on a lot of servers u gotta actually queue to pvp for anything up to 2-4 hours. why wait? go DaoC port somewhere.. insta pvp.

WoW is good for a first time mmorpg experience.. but for daoc players.. sorry.. it just doesnt cut it.

Tbh playing on Prydwen for 2 and a half years and in Deathwing for 4 months i really think it's much easier to get pvp in wow. There were times when i was low rr and not in a good guild that finding an interesting rvr fight while roaming around prydwen took 1h+ (not counting the-get to mg, get killed in 2 secs and return fights, that was just bad). Pre-NF it wasn't at all easy to get fights in daoc/prydwen and you were usually terribly outnumbered or outskilled. 8/10 matches in ctf i play are against people around my level and roughly equal numbers. AV is pretty balanced in my server as well.

Queues are very annoying, i will give you that, but i think it's mostly a class/battleground design balancing issue, as the one team has it slightly easier at WG (horde) and one in AV (alliance) so it's actually usual to see 100 horde waiting outside WSG and 100 alliance outside AV, both not getting any pvp.

With the release of wow euro beta i stop playing daoc. It was a time that i have sicked and tired of nf and wanted something different. Wow has all the requirements to give this.

Blizard has a good name and manage with wow to make a nice mmorpg. Nice enviroment and the whole setup was user friendly unlike daoc. All were great until i dinged my rogue 60. After that and when i start to think seriously for the pvp , the first great dissappointment came.

With the release of the bgs and the honor system this dissapointment became worse. i agree with Ilaya that said: "the pvp has obviously just been stuck on as an afterthought".

With the honor system the rewards were stupid. Only the last rank rewards can say that are cool but then, they made the ranking with that way that it is impossible to reach it. With the bgs came the 2nd dissapointment. Endless queues making pvp a suffering and not fun.

For teh above reasons i decided to return to daoc that may has lots of cons but it has its rvr which cannot be compared with anything else. i prefer to die 1000 times from warlocks rather than w8 3 hours in order to get in an instance and then if i go afk for 5 -10 min to get thrown out being forced to w8 3 hours again :)

I hope blizard see this and improve it because i really believe wow as a game has lots of things to give.

Aye I've played DAoC from closed Euro beta too and there was a lot of shit on the offical forums.
I'm more on about the people playing the game itself tho. My point about the forums was that's where you'll find complaints about the stability/bugs/server issues rather than the insults, although you'll find lots of those as well :)

PS For Danya - I believe most of the people commenting are those, like myself, who have played WoW extensively and drawn the conclusion they have posted about.

Queues don't bother me that much - always had to wait hours for PvP in DAoC as well (or just chain die, either way it was dull).

Most time i had to wait for AV was 3 secs. Roll Horde, you get in the bg's easily and you win them too, 8/10 or something!

But seriously, queues depend a lot on faction and server, i was just lucky.

ps. Fyi the thread's not dead, it's on the first page since it was created.

i played wow 3-4weeks then i quited, didnt enjoy it at all.

But WoW got some very nice stuff like AH, the mailboxes. Crafting thing, tho i dont think crafting should do items like engeriing to help in pve/pvp.

WoW is good for people who like to : do quest's instead of hardcore action..
WoW is good for people who like to : kill enemies for silly items!
WoW is good for people who like to : kill onixia!! so fun11! ... or not.

Yeah yeah.. There will come higher tier monsters then onixia, up to tier 7were onixia is 3 or something like that, but seriously.. zzz :D
