The more I look at it, the more ridiculous it gets. I'm pretty agnostic about Apple generally but this:

1. Looks really uncomfortable to use. I'd say that's my biggest criticism; imagine just holding the thing for hours to watch a video or read.

2. Would require you to re-encode any movie or TV you download onto Apple's own formats, then sync the thing with your main computer to get them. And Apple's history suggests they won't be opening this up to .avi or .mkV any time soon.

3. Is thin, but not particularly light or compact.

4. Has no USB ports at all. No memory cards, no nothing.

5. Has no camera. I could actually see a benefit in this as a video comms device, but then they didn't include a camera; go figure.

I really can't understand why anyone would want one of these other than for the badge; full screen browsing is literally the only thing it can do better than a netbook; I really don't buy the ereader pitch because its still the wrong kind of screen for extended reading (eInk isn't just about power saving) and the form factor is too big.

You know what? I actually think Microsoft's Courier is much more interesting.

I don't get it and I don't think it will sell that well either. People were generally enthusiastic about the iphone, ipod and imac but there are very few positive opinions on it.

Why is the bezel so big anyway? No cam for skype chatting in bed!? I bet it has their shitty codecs so it will be a pain in the ass to watch movies on it too. I also bet it won't start at £300 in the uk!

I think pure logistics will kill it - it has a big unprotected screen so youd have to transport it in a case and as others have said its basically a flat slab that your gonna have to prop up precariously or hold onto all the time.

Hilarious :)

Its business genies. Its got fuck all in it, therefore I doubt it costs very much at all to make. Fuckwits will buy it for £500+ and then buy the exact same thing again in 2 years only then with stuff you take for granted on a netbook added.

I have read some awesome fanboy justification around the web today, it's very easy to slate and very hard to defend it, yet some people have managed to make out like their lives are going to be so much better for it.

I was thinking today, if they released a new macbook that had a detachable screen that you could dock / undock that became this iPad thing, then it could have been a very interesting concept indeed. Think about it, you've got your laptop in the house, typing away then for some reason you want to ... er ... remove the screen and take it somewhere else (such as to the train) to continue reading your magazines, cached content, porn or whatever.

*scratches head* if you see what I mean?

As someone at my work described to me; it's a super expensive digital photoframe that you can touch. At least digital photoframes have HDMI and higher resolutions.

No multitasking and general apple fuckwittery means I'm not getting one, being an apple product it was highly unlikely anyway! Looking at the HP Slate, which looks much better, although the release date is rather nebulous.

Beat me to it - I was going to mention the Lenovo thing. Saw it on the CES coverage a few weeks back.

The problem with multi-tasking seems to be an OS limitation from what I've read which might be fixed by OS 4, however by then I suspect the iPad will be on to its second generation.

Lol - it only has 1 30 pin connector (proprietary?) - you have to seperately buy a camera connection kit to plug in a USB converter or an SD chip holder (not both at once).

Pretty crap really but allows them to force you to buy more Apple gear off them as you cant connect to anything usefull without the add ons :p

Sadly it's only 3rd party apps you can't multitask with, Apple ones multitask fine (itunes is quite happy in the background). Which is why Apple boil my piss with their shitty locked down anus aids. It's like their whole attitude is "We know better than you what you can do with your phone, so ner.". Well I'm sorry Apple, but I have wanted to right click for context menus on my computers since the beginning, WHY THE FUCK DID IT TAKE YOU 10 FUCKING YEARS TO ADMIT I WAS FUCKING RIGHT YOU SHIT FUCKING *****?

And breathe.

As you can tell, I fucking hate Apple.

The MS Courier does interest me but it being something by Microsoft means they probably will lack the balls to actually release it, they've already shown this sort of attitude with the Zune HD.

A different slant here...

Interesting advertising perspective here on the iPad.

I guess they've got a point. Most of us here posting on the 'techie' thread don't have the slightest interest in buying one because we're probably not the ideal market.

Well I don't know what people are whinging about. I like it, it looks nice. It doesn't need half the things that people think it does. If all you do is read the internet and send emails, this will be fine.

I'd much rather have this on my lap, than a heavy laptop blowing roasting hot air into my fingers. I remember reading what people were writing about the iPod before it was released, saying "oh great, another stupid mp3 player". Guess what, nobody has mp3 players, they have iPods.

The only thing I think it should have that it doesn't, is the ability to make a hands-free phone call. So you can discuss a document over the phone, without holding a phone.

What, you mean like some form of "iPhone" :p

(Read: The iPhone actually does that, you can make the call go into the background)

Pretty much. I don't see why people are so resentful of something that they're not forced to buy. Nobody derides laptops for being "OMFG JUST A SMALLER VERSION OF MY PC AND IT CAN'T EVEN PLAY MW2!!11one".

Companies have been trying to perfect tablet devices for years. With this, Apple may give that market a huge kick up the backside.

I'd rather have that Lenovo IdeaPad - Two gadgets in one and without being restricted by Apple

Shocking as it may seem Tom not every one goes the iPod route, in fact I steer well clear since I detest itunes and it is partly this combination that has allowed the iPod to dominate.

I've got two ipods, one was a gift, one was a freebie. I wouldn't have bought one. I use my phone for mp3's anyway, as carrying around two devices does not appeal. The ipod only makes an appearance if I am at the gym alone or on holiday.

I really think you are missing the point here Tom, there are other tablets due out this quarter which offer more for less. This is classic Apple, covering product flaws with advertising hype.

But Tom, if all you do is check emails and browse the web, why would you need something so utterly pointless and expensive to do it? Why not get something half the price with more functionality and less restrictions?

No, the point is that Apple are selling things that people want. There's no other explanation for the fact that their products are so popular.

Why do people buy a car with metallic paint, instead of choosing the dull green one? Because they want it. Its the same with this, if people can afford it, they'll buy it, and be happy.

I genuinely don't see the issue. Of course the nerds will all be laughing that it doesn't have the latest protocol, or driver, or some other bollocks, but the people buying it won't care. They'll be sat there with their shiny iPad, doing whatever they wanted to do with it. As far as they're concerned, they'll have one, and you won't. They won't need a DVD, or a USB slot, or a memory slot, because they're not interested in all that stuff.

I can't fault Apple for their marketing. Its perfect. I don't own any Apple products, but I'd like one of these. I won't buy one, but I still want it—because its shiny, and looks cool. That's what Apple do; they make computers and gadgets cool. PCs in white boxes aren't cool.
