Massive pfft for me. It says my pre-ordered delivery from PC world will be sent out no earlier than the 21st October, the day before the lazy wankers at Royal mail have the day off.

I've received mine from PC World this morning, so you may get it earlier than expected.

I have a feeling that Uk copies may have been sent out early due to the postal strike.

Bumclouds. Play have mine listed as being "packaged" which means no doubt it'll hit strike-town :(

Hopefully they won't use Royal Mail to deliver the packages...

I think we already knew that some copies of Windows 7 were sent out early due to the impending postal strike, but it's confirmed here.

Seems that DSGi (owner of PC World & Currys) thought it would be nice customer service to do so... Well I never, I'm impressed.

Ouch, good luck there, I hope your local Citylink guy is not the standard drive past the house and decide nobody is home type.

Mine came through the post this morning. Not planning on installing until the weekend though

Aye, same here. Just ordered a new harddisk (normal, not SSD - can't afford one!) and will look to do install over the weekend. Just need to reshuffle my data etc. Looking forward to it though.

Right folks. I have had the RC of Windows 7 on my laptop for quite some time now, and have decided that if you are happy with Vista (which I am....very) it is entirely fucking pointless. So my question is thus...

Is it easy enough to nuke my W7 partition and put Ubuntu on instead? I already have Vista for all my Windows needs, and wouldn't mind a proper alternative on the other partition, as Vista.1 isn;t really an alternative. So....how do I do it then?

See this is what I figured would be the case. I've not used Win7 yet but always assumed it was basically vista with a few extra features. However, most people I know that have used both say that 7 is leaps and bounds better. What exactly is the big difference?

Windows 7 has big funky MacOS style icons at the bottom.

Vista looks like Windows.

The other differences? Nope I'm struggling. Maybe it's cos El Reg likes 7?

I hear it's faster, have you noticed that at all?

Not in the slightest. But then again I am running a C2D with 4Gb of RAM and a 9600GS, which Vista was fine with. 7 seems a bit better on my old P4 but meh. If you're running that sort of hardware maybe some new hardware rather than a new OS will suit?

7 is an absolute shedload faster than Vista here.
However, I've noticed from more than a few sources that the experience is a little "random" - some PC's just don't appear to benefit that much from it, others are miles ahead. Reliability definitely isn't an issue, so I can only suspect it's a matter of drivers and the likes.

I was never particularly unhappy with Vista - it worked, it was never particularly slow once it'd loaded up. 7 here is definitely far better.

Mind you, I'm currently having to use it on a celeron D with a gig of ram and a 6200. It's quicker than XP is on it.
Just bought a 3rd copy of 7 Professional for my work laptop for £30 thanks to the student licensing thingy :D

7 was much nippier when I had the RC up and running. This could however be down to the fact that I will be switching to 64bit from 32bit preinstalled by the manufacturer vista.

Frankly though if it wasn't for the fact it was £50, I wouldn't have bought Windows 7 as I was also fine with Vista.

Thank you all for ignoring my question.

I want to kill W7 deed. I want to make the partition deleted and put Ubuntu on. How do I do this?

PS Vista > 7.

I was being serious dude. Use the installer, make sure you pick the "sort out my own partitions" option, it should just let you nuke the Win7 from orbit.

Any specific reason for Ubuntu btw?
