Bought the Home Premium meself at £45, seemed like a reasonable price for an OS (ie not the batshitinsane prices MS usually charge). The XP mode may have been nice but I doubt it'll have been necessary for me.

some sites like parcelforce.com still need xp, ive had problems booking parcels for pick up thru the site with both vista ultimate and win7 until win7 got xp mode. there are some others who are as anal as parcelforce.com fuck knows why they have it like that

Starting to wonder if I should cancel my professional pre-order, the more I read the more it looks like XP Mode won't help me play Final Fantasy 7 at all.

There is in the UK, as far as I know - you can still get the Home Premium/Pro version for £45/90 respectively.

Check their windows 7 upgrade program. Should be on their website, as long as you bought the laptop within the time frame specified then you can.

Why aren't these pre-order prices the normal prices for Windows 7? £45 for Home Premium and £90 for Professional seem like pretty good deals compared to around £150 and £220.

I know you can usually get OEM versions for a lower price compared to retail, but surely non-technical people who miss out on this deal might be more tempted to upgrade their existing machines if the price is more reasonable? At £45 I'd probably recommend to friends to upgrade to Windows 7, at £150 I'd tell them to stick with what they've got.

Installing RC1 was mostly harmless for most people so I certainly don't see it being worse at RTM level.

I installed the RC on this laptop a couple of months ago, just after it came out. Used it for 2 weeks then went back to Vista. I found the most of the programs I actually needed for work (vSphere Client, Terminal Services client, Acrobat) either had issues or just flat out didn't work. In the rest of the OS I didn't really see any massive improvement over Vista. It feels almost more like 6.11 rather than 7, if you get me.

So I haven't preordered and I really don't think I'll be buying it either. I might get a copy through work's MSDN subscription, but not one I'll be putting my hand in my pocket for. Windows Home Server OTOH, looks far more likely to get some of my coin.

I've been using the RC since it came out, lovely OS. Not had any problems with any of the programs I use (including Acrobat and Photoshop)
