So my lone trouble PC, i rolled back to 8.1, windows still activated....

but it wont on 10.
i'm confused and just gonna wait ont that one until it gets the message saying it can upgrade through windows update.

The best part is I was trying to remember where I got those keys from and then I checked and found out they were the cheap upgrade keys from 7>8 that cost £25 - the supplier? Microsoft itself.

Maybe you can't upgrade an upgrade license? Unless you other machines are running the upgrade keys too? I would be tempted to start clean with 7 then upgrade to 10. But then I have never been a fan of upgrading an OS I have been using for a while I prefer a clean start.

You should be able to. Mine was originally a Win 7 upgraded with with the same cheap update to 8 that @ECA has.

Yeah and the other 2 computers are on win10 , both worked fine. both via the same key upgrade process.

Just got my X99 baby all sorted. I spent yesterday dismantling the old and putting in the new (there's no such thing as quickly swapping out hardware where water cooling is concerned. :\ I hope I don't have to do that again for a while).

I had to re-install 7, do the phone authentication thing (because I'd already upgraded to 10 on the old hardware and the Win 7 activation thing told me to piss off), spent the better part of a day messing around with updates (honestly, why can't there just be a "don't even speak to me until you're 100% up to date" button? All the restarts and small updates, ugh) then upgraded to 10 smoothly, then spent more time making up a proper USB boot disk, then had to faff around to get it to find my M.2 SSD (which already had the upgraded Win 10 install on it - go figure), then installed Windows, then it sat there hogging all my internet but not visibly downloading anything, now it seems to be up to date and I'm just getting it how I like it.

End result, a totally new and clean, fully activated WIn 10 Pro install with only a few hiccups along the way.

They dont come with the distro so you have to wait for all the patches to dl to get them. I tried to manually update and got it chucked back at me cause it was doing it in the back ground

Yeah Mori I also tried to manually install and got the oddest error messages.

Only beef I have with it atm is that I can't uninstall all the apps it wants me to have.

Did a clean driver install and all my problems went away. Honestly like the first thing i tried to fix problems

My boot up issues (slow as fuck) are apparently caused by AMD drivers so graphics card issues are not unique to Nvidia types.

Once its into windows its fine, it just takes around 2 minutes.

It's been working like charm on my desktop, no problems what so ever.
Mrs JBP|s laptop is a different story all together though. starting with failing to install two win7 updates forcing me to reinstall and update win7 to randomly having win 10 not being able boot 2 days after install, forcing another reinstall (thankfully not a million and one updates this time).

Mine said that it had failed to authenticate but 24hours later had done.

If your install works leave it for a bit. I imagine the auth servers are taking a hammering.

It wasn't failure to auth, it wasnt even letting me proceed past entering a key, it was just bouncing me saying invalid key, let alone getting to activation.
