Ron Atkinson was forced to quit his job at ITV after making a racist comment about Desailly (fks) after Chelsea's European cup tie. He thought he was off air but aparently some asian/middle eastern channels were still filming.

The guardian are also looking into whether or not they should sack him from his weekly column post.

The problem is, no one knows what he said.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Ron Atkinson (Big Ron) was sacked today for saying 'something racist' on TV. He thought we was off air and was angry that desailly had got himself sent off. Or somthing like that anyway.

Before I read what he said, I thought it was a bit excessive that he was resigning.

Now I don't.

I condemn rascicm with a vengeance but I do consider it a strange world that the term n***er has appropriate usage and inappropriate usage on our mainstream media channels. I would have honestly thought that any mature well rounded person of Afro Caribbean or West Indian descent would have tried very hard not to use the word to refer to someone else, especially of the same ethnic origin but this is deemed to be ok.

Or maybe I'm just an old git that doesn't understand the whole vibe ?

It's all about taking a word, and turning it around to mean something "positive". However, a "white person" cannot really use the term.

It's all dodgy ground as far as i'm concerned.

Still, Ron Atkinson used it in a negative context, that's why he's in the shit.

Any word intentionally used as a derogatory term really, and the context applies too, in Big-ot Ron's case preceeding it with "f*cking lazy" gives a slight hint the context he was using it in.

Ron's a f*cking stupid honkey, basically.

How about the internet? You don't know if the guy on the other puter is black or white or hispanic or whatever. So are the words *****, jew etc. ok when you don't know the sayer?

Well you can still get a good idea from the context, but still i don't think it's appropriate for anyone to use those terms regardless of who they are over the internet, precisely because it's anonymous and people can/will take what you say out of context and be offended. Regardless of your intentions.

Not if you are using them in the derogatory sense of suggesting that anyone is a worse or less intelligent person by using those terms as you are saying that the very fact of anyone being black would make them worse which is obviously cobblers and racist

He was never a good commentator. Everyone knows him as the idiot of the scene. The man made more blunders more frequently than Murray Walker.

I dont' really care about him resigning. What I do think is wrong is that although it is not ok for him to say it, it is then ok for every online news site to post exactly what he said! A couple of stars don't mean s**t when you can easily tell what the f*****g word is!

If he'd have said 'fucking lazy yank' do you think he would have been sacked?

PC gone mad tbh.

Except that as a general rule most americans dont object to the word "yank" or see it as derogatory, wheras virt every black person sees n** etc as derogatory and whatever its initial meanings or derivations it is now used solely as a derogatory word.

edit: Answering Tom's last post
Not really. He blatantly used a very derogatory term for a group of people.

He obviously thinks in this way most of the time and is therefore not really a mistake that he said it but a mistake that he got caught out.

Its a very good reason for him to be fired/resign

Didn't you know? Extreme blatant racism is ok in humour, but not in the press!

Or not by sane people anyway ;)
