So I have been tidying up the decades of data collection/storage (currently about 60TBs) and the following title caught my eye (don't worry there are thousands more just like this one).

Movie Clips/redneckvagina.mpeg

At some point tomorrow I shall take a looksy. Now obviously this is not something I have shot and named....

So has anyone else noticed weird and wonderful filenames when searching back through years of data hoarding aka collection?

TBH, I don't ever look through my old shit, but with your prompting I just found this:

I haven't kept any oddities it seems, a few old screenshots from BF2, CS and Overwatch nothing that interesting.

Thinking about it I need fibre around my house or 10gig copper networking, this gigabit bollox is just that, bollox. I am copying the last two or so terabytes back and can then upgrade the hard drives in the other NAS. Never been so excited watching a data transfer nearing completion. What the fuck has happened to me?

Nothing wrong with wanting faster, I went to 2.5gig between some bits but need another switch to take advantage of it from the computer.

Oh completely forgot about that, need to go check on whether I could scrap through with CAT5E/6 or need new copper.

I honestly could get away with shitty wifi, but I'm thinking of getting a couple of these to act as a backbone between the shed I'm building and the house. But really, that's massive overkill. I doubt I'll ever need (or be even able to utilise given the shitty 35mbit mobile connection I've got here) 1Gb ethernet.

What did you go for?

I went for the same as what is on the back of the TV unit, a Zyxel MG-105. The new switch will be located near the Asus XT12 and connect to its 2.5gig LAN port, then the TV Switch will connect to the new switch and then my computer will connect to the new switch instead of one XT12 1gig ports.

I get 2.5 Gb/s through Cat5e no problem, one of the points of the standard was to breathe new life into existing cable that wouldn't be guaranteed to work with 10 Gb/s (or would but with much shorter run length limits). I think Cat5e is good for up to 100 metres at 2.5 (or 5) GB/s.

Good stuff, now I need to find a low-profile PCIE nic card which supports 2.5 GB/s. What is everyone using (unless onboard) if any?

I have a motherboard with a built-in 2.5 Gb/s NIC now but, before, I had one of these plugged into a USB (3+, obviously) port on the main PC and one of these (which comes with a low-profile bracket) in the NAS, both connected to this and the switch was connected to my ISP modem/router (which has a 2.5 Gb/s port) via whatever cable the electrician used when wiring up the house. I'm confident it's not Cat6, it's not thick enough and there's nowhere near enough shielding.

I did upgrade to Cat6 even though Cat5e would of had no issue over the distances I run, after all if I was going through the odd wall etc I didn't want to have to rework cabling if I get a bug to go 10gig in the future :p

Like caLLous my motherboard came with a 2.5gig port (Intel I225) and I just had to get a card for my Synology (Synology E10G18-T1) which is technically my first step to 10gig even though it currently runs at 2.5.

Just reused some "old" NAS drives into one of my smaller NAS.

pool: datapool
state: DEGRADED
status: One or more devices is currently being resilvered. The pool will
continue to function, possibly in a degraded state.
action: Wait for the resilver to complete.
scan: resilver in progress since Wed Aug 9 13:55:05 2023
4.02T / 4.02T scanned, 361G / 4.02T issued at 873M/s
90.2G resilvered, 8.76% done, 01:13:54 to go
config:

datapool DEGRADED 0 0 0

I like that speed for spinning rust :)

Nice, I am still moving terabytes of data around after upgrading disks and letting the old drives flow down to my other NAS'. Once the final NAS is complete will need to find an offsite home for it so I can replicate daily to it.

I only have the one 2.5 Gb/s enabled machine online atm because the NAS is off most of the time so I can't show the speed of a file transfer over the network. All I have as a demonstration is...

For shame, a NAS should be on 24/7 :p
