hehe you haven't downloaded the virus have you? Apparently Valve put off the release because of DoS attacks and the net was spread with virus riddled versions of 'Steam'.

the beta was a little temperamental for me but I got games working. I nearly finished HL1 again through it. It's nice to play it at 1600x1200.

I had Steam....worked fine for a bit, could play CS 1.6 and such. But after a bit of time it seemed to install itself again, so I had two installed copies of Steam on my hard drive. It all went downhill from there - crashes all the time. Eventually I just couldn't be bothered and uninstalled it...

(I CAN edit posts! I was clicking the one above....how stupid of me :))

Unfortunately it looks like you'll need Steam installed in order to play HL2 online (and any of its mods), so I really do hope they have something stable out by it's release.

Valve force you to install Steam to play a game you've spent your hard earned pennies on? I thought they were the good guys... :(

Just for info, this is non beta official Half Life, you need it for CS TFC DoD or whatever.
Not a mention of it on the news page of BW, amazing considering its easily the most popular online game .
Everyone I know is trying to download, and only 2 people -who started at 7 am this morning- have got the new cs version.
Its a drama :)

I think the news page may be broken, by the lack of updates.

I'm sure a stable version will bundled with HL2 if its needed to play online games.

You got to wait.
When it says preparing to play game, that means just that.
When its said that for about an hour, it will start downloading the new cs (or whatever)
Anything from 40 minutes to 5 hours later, it will be finished, and you can play :/
That not unstable, its just the servers are massively overloaded, and everything is taking large amounts of time.
If you're not really bothered, I'd wait till tomorrow. Or next week. :)

Lots of servers are going over to steam now. Our clan server has already . Im sure others will still be non-steam for a littlewhile though.
2 weeks is the maximum from what Im hearing though.

Ahh, you've started to install...I have no idea, just could (drastic answer) kill it, uninstall it, and reinstall HL/NS.

What's the panic? You've got until March anyway :p

You will need steam to play HL and any of its mods that use online components. In two weeks time WON shuts down for good, and so nothing pre-steam will be able to authorise. So basically its Steam or nothing.

Thank you Throddy for being the only person to realise that the servers are shagged because of the amount of people trying to download the thing. Depending on what files you already have installed it can need to download a hell of a lot of stuff. Just wait a few days, there is no rush.

Why is WON shutting down?

And Steam is out of the beta stage now...?

Yes. /me resists urge to point out the obvous in a troll like manner.

Steam is now final, Valve's content delivery system has launched, it has a far better game authorisation system, which should also help stop a few more hackers. WON was dated and probably cost them quite a bit of money to run.

I'll be interested to see if Steam turns in to a front end for the Half-Life(2) community offering maps etc...
