also the bloke probably had bad pings because there wernt many good servers around, so you mostly got ones people hosted on their own connection or very over used ones.

Starting to get annoyed with the amount of crap being posted about steam (not only here). PLease remember that their content servers are being overloaded before you decide that its useless and crap software. As for the link Summo posted, what a load of bollocks.
Steam does not disable 3rd party query tools, I used ASE with the beta and when they update to cater for the full version I will continue to. However the Steam browser is very good, especially when coupled with the built in buddy list/messanger. This is not bloatware, it works as a seamless and integral part of Steam.
My pings were better on steam. One guy had a bad experience, judging by the rest of his rant, he probbaly joined a European server from the US and didnt realise.
Banlists> OKay a touchy subject, but here is my tuppance worth. Steam is far more resilient to cheating, people on the ban lists that are still going to cause trouble will get banned again quickly, and probably have their steam account suspended. Valve are about to release HL2, they don't need to restrict access to a game that they will soon stop supporting as actively -at least they didnt remove the authentication procedure completly as id did for a while with Quake3.

I agree with ch3tan in that the network is very slow. At the same time though I have a problem with my client where on every server or map change it wants to download resources from the server for 4 mins then verfies them another 1 minute before timing out and me having to go though the process again to get in. This is a total of 15 mins to join a server. Surly thats not to do with the steam network as at this point my modems activity is constant, which like most people to the steam network youll only see the odd flicker.

I'm downloading the full install, but I doubt it'll make a single bit of difference. I don't understand Steam and how it works whatsoever. Can I uninstall it or will my previous install of HL be gone?
So confusing! It's like the worst bit of puberty all over again.

It has come to my attention that steam was developed to rid the world of CS players.

ASE won't recognise the games until they are launched through Steam.
