also the bloke probably had bad pings because there wernt many good servers around, so you mostly got ones people hosted on their own connection or very over used ones.

No, the servers on the beta, which is were he is drawing conclusions from, were very very good. The majority were hosted by clans or gaming companys.

Starting to get annoyed with the amount of crap being posted about steam (not only here). PLease remember that their content servers are being overloaded before you decide that its useless and crap software. As for the link Summo posted, what a load of bollocks.

Steam does not disable 3rd party query tools, I used ASE with the beta and when they update to cater for the full version I will continue to. However the Steam browser is very good, especially when coupled with the built in buddy list/messanger. This is not bloatware, it works as a seamless and integral part of Steam.

My pings were better on steam. One guy had a bad experience, judging by the rest of his rant, he probbaly joined a European server from the US and didnt realise.

Banlists> OKay a touchy subject, but here is my tuppance worth. Steam is far more resilient to cheating, people on the ban lists that are still going to cause trouble will get banned again quickly, and probably have their steam account suspended. Valve are about to release HL2, they don't need to restrict access to a game that they will soon stop supporting as actively -at least they didnt remove the authentication procedure completly as id did for a while with Quake3.

I also used ASE with Steam; I found that that worked (apart from some problems I had with ASE not detecting the right place to launch CS from).

The Steam Beta that I used worked fine for a period, until it started just generally going wrong. It copied itself again onto my hard drive for no discernible reason, and kept crashing all over the place.

Eventually I just gave up and uninstalled it. I hope this final version works properly....

(For the record, I don't believe what Summo posted was true; I just felt I had to post what Valve put in order to clarify the subject.)

Hehe. :) I love these week-long Internet sub-cultures. In a years time people will wonder what these Steam pictures were all about, but right now, here we all are! In the moment! Sharing!

I agree with ch3tan in that the network is very slow. At the same time though I have a problem with my client where on every server or map change it wants to download resources from the server for 4 mins then verfies them another 1 minute before timing out and me having to go though the process again to get in. This is a total of 15 mins to join a server. Surly thats not to do with the steam network as at this point my modems activity is constant, which like most people to the steam network youll only see the odd flicker.

It is only slow at the moment because practically everyone is trying to download and update all the same time.

When the Beta was out, it wasn't slow at all - speeds of over 50kb/sec downloading were the norm (I'm on a 512k ADSL line).

I'm sure it will pick up when everyone has it and it is 'go'.

I installed it no problems, it asked me if I wanted to copy or move my HL install I told it to copy it and it did. I then set all the mods to auto-update and went away, came back that evening and it was all ready and working.

Perhaps if people just let it do its thing than sitting there huffing and puffing over it they wouldn't be having a problem

Steam was working fine when I got it on Friday, now it's fucked. It was working earlier, went to play a game and got some error message and it crashed. Now it won't launch, regardless of how much I hammer the Steam icon ;/

I'm downloading the full install, but I doubt it'll make a single bit of difference. I don't understand Steam and how it works whatsoever. Can I uninstall it or will my previous install of HL be gone?

So confusing! It's like the worst bit of puberty all over again.

Yes, you can uninstall it.

I've reinstalled mine about 7 times in total since I first got it.....

Based on my first impressions, steam is shite. It takes ages to start up, it refuses to accept my installation of natural selection, it just asked to download hl, even though its installed with steam!

I'm wondering if steam is short for anything....

Its taking ages, I can only hope Chetan is correct, and the system is just busy. You'd think they would tell you that though.

Did that to me, duplicated itself.

Then you get messages about 'This game is on another install of Steam, please run that' or something.

ASE won't recognise the games until they are launched through Steam. :(

I just had several games of ns with ASE, running hl from its original directory, and hl1110.exe patch (not steam install), so try that if you're having problems z
