Well two pcs and two non working installs. GG Valve :|

This is the final install for people who keep asking. After the download youll see the T&C thingy which does say BETA services which has throw everyone. Its #1 of 10000 things valve didnt sort out before releasing steam.

If you read the T&C you will see that its still beta evaluation software. Basically Valve wanting to test Steam on a large scale before HL2.

Umm theres now a steam installer on the steam site. Its 380mb and seems to hold the whole of CS 1.6.
They have also seemed to have removed the 500K installer?

afaik thats because the Steam clients are (as would obviously happen with any release like this) raping the delivery system.

Hello,

Is there any chance of getting the full steam client + CS 1.6 file (400mb) uploaded to the bwftp please?

This file has become available and should save everyone a shit load of hassle.

Thanks

leggy.

Ok, so I ran Steam at about 1pm this afternoon. Having previous experience with the Beta, I knew it would take a while to download all the updates (CS 1.6 etc).

So anyway, I ran it. It said 'Your Half-Life files are being copied to the Steam cache. This may take several minutes.' when I went to the footy this afternoon.

I've just come back (6pm) and it hasn't even finished that! Has anyone else had this happen to them?

'Several minutes'....several hours more like....

Yes. Download the full installer.

Yeh, I was going to, but a 164 minute wait on FilePlanet.

Plus, if Steam really does have Spyware in it, are we all wanting to install it? Or will good ol' adaware do the job?

It doesn't have spyware in it as far as i know.

It is the programs that were running around pretending to steam that had the problems.

On the subject of Steam and Spyware...

The Steam FAQ says:
Some users have seen non-Steam related information (like names of private files on their computer) show up inside their Steam cache files, raising privacy concerns. This is actually a result of the way Windows handles files. The cache file gets created on the client using the Windows CreateFile() command. This command will create the file but not initialize it. Due to the large size of the file, we don't bother initializing the empty data blocks in it as this can take an appreciable amount of time. On NTFS machines, files created with this method happen to have the property of appearing empty (initialized to zero) but for FAT32 machines, it shows up as whatever old data was sitting on drive in the sectors that just got allocated for the cache. The people that are reporting this behavior are actually seeing old data from their hard drives. It's never uploaded or even looked at by the client. Eventually, as they download more data, it gets written over.

I suppose if we are to believe them, then Steam is OK.

Which I hope is the truth....

Starting to get annoyed with the amount of crap being posted about steam (not only here). PLease remember that their content servers are being overloaded before you decide that its useless and crap software. As for the link Summo posted, what a load of bollocks.

Steam does not disable 3rd party query tools, I used ASE with the beta and when they update to cater for the full version I will continue to. However the Steam browser is very good, especially when coupled with the built in buddy list/messanger. This is not bloatware, it works as a seamless and integral part of Steam.

My pings were better on steam. One guy had a bad experience, judging by the rest of his rant, he probbaly joined a European server from the US and didnt realise.

Banlists> OKay a touchy subject, but here is my tuppance worth. Steam is far more resilient to cheating, people on the ban lists that are still going to cause trouble will get banned again quickly, and probably have their steam account suspended. Valve are about to release HL2, they don't need to restrict access to a game that they will soon stop supporting as actively -at least they didnt remove the authentication procedure completly as id did for a while with Quake3.
