OK i was with you all the way up until the word 'lower'. You don't i repeat DON'T condemm yourself to the lower stream. Employers don't look at fucking A Level or GNVQ grades, they look for the degree or wotever qualification you achieved at Uni. (for a top job that is)

There are exceptions, and no doubt some smartarse will say 'well I did a GNVQ, and I now own Microsoft' or something, but generally GNVQ = Mechanic at Kwik-Fit.

This last paragraph looks like its been made up to me. So basically wot ur saying here is that all the ppl in the UK doing a GNVQ in Business st. r going to be fitting tyres when their older? IF a GNVQ gets u into Uni then there isn't a problem. You can get a good qual at Uni and then find a top job, hopefully. N e way im doing geography A Level so i wont, as you say, 'condem' myself to lower labour.

Grom soz but i aint impressed bi wot u just put. What do you think Mr.B????

"Since the technical and vocational subjects currently offered in Advanced GNVQ are not particularly appropriate to the academic subjects studied at leading universities, most would normally expect such candidates to take, in addition, two A levels in traditional academic subjects."

something i read recently, seemed topical

GNVQs were invented for people who couldn't hack A-levels and wanted a more job-based approach to learning. i.e. so they could go straight into a job once they had finished their GNVQ or degree.

If you check my post again, I say that you may get into a university with a GNVQ, but not all universities are the same. Would you rather have a manager who got a first at Cambridge, or one who got a first at Aberystwyth?

Sure people who did GNVQs go on to get 'good' jobs - maybe in 'management'. Doesn't mean I wil ever respect them. Putting MBA after your name is like saying 'I am a worthless capitalist cunt whose only purpose in life is to make money'

But that is my opinion that last bit.

GNVQ's are acceptable as long as you do not wish to attend an Oxbridge University and study what is generally agreed to be a "classical" subject.

Many of the new Universities (ie. ex-Polytechnics) offer more vocational style courses which GNVQ's are better suited to.

My initial point however is still valid...in that the leap from studying GNVQ's to a full Honours Degree is fairly large, whereas the leap from doing A-Level's to a Degree is fairly small...

tbh, as an employer myself, I tend to ignore GCSE/A-Level results and to a certain degree the make/model of degree...you can tell a lot about someone from an hours worth of one on one interviewing...and tbh, direct job applicable skills are NOT essential - I like candidates with a degree because:

a) They have some semblance of Neuron activity.
b) They have the ability (if not necessarily the desire) to stick at something for 3+ years.

...and that's just about it...

In the industry I work in (Investment Management) you have SO much to learn and the industry changes SO fast that even a degree in Accountancy Management (or whatever the modern equivalent is) is probably going to be more of a hinderance than a help.

Basically a good CV with a good degree (2:1 or higher) gets you a foot in the door, but after that it's down to interview technique and whether you are right for the job and whether the job is right for you...

See this thread is useful after all :D

ta,

I tried Toys R Us, but they only had the appaulingly made "Darth Maul" double-light sabre one - I had one which I broke within the first 20 seconds of a Jedi-Knight, light-sabre fight with a friend :( - sort of like in the movie, except Darth Maul didn't get covered in Battery Acid and didn't have the piss taken out of him for the next 2 weeks...

:(

ps. Yes I really am 29 :(

ah yes mebbe but if the guy, and this may be a big IF, got a better degree at Aberswyeth than at Oxbridge, who would you pick then?

So what did u study 4 A Level, at wat u do at Uni????

Wtf is this supposed to mean? How the hell can you have a grudge against sum1 who takes GNVQ's? So if u were 2 meet me half way along a country lane would you smash my head on a rock or something?

Depends really. Degrees don't mean that much - my degree is fairly irrelevant to my job, it's more a case of being able to do a degree course, as Mr B said. I think I would decide better on meeting the people in question - the Aberystwyth person might have much more dedication, it is true...

Sorry, yeah I wasn't clear. I don't respect people who do management degrees - not necessarily people who do GNVQs. And no I wouldn't smash your head in :D

I did English, Geography, Art and Economics at A-Level and got AABC respectively. I then did English at Leeds uni, and I got a 2.1, which I blame entirely on Q2 and Counterstrike :)

I'm now a level designer at Particle Systems in Sheffield.

This discussion is all well and good but....

GLyNN3RS is a thick cunt, it's so damn obvious, so he's not going to get a decent degree or get into a decent university anyway.

A level or equivalent results might not matter that much when it comes to getting a job if you have a degree, how ever they do get looked at. I have interviewd people and while their A levels were not a considered when deciding to give someone an interview, during the intreview I did ask them why they got those results and why they chose their university and their degree course. It is specially funny when I can see their grades are better than mine but they suffer trying to justify it. That's purley for my amusments.I am a cunt after all.
However their A levels grades never made any difference in their selection. Their degree and what they got out of it (not just results) was a lot more importanty. How ever in other fields and companies it does matter. I advise universirsity sandwich courses if possible it gives you an edge over applicants who dont have any work experience it can also raise your starting salary. If you follow up from same course to a similar course at uni a lot of the first year can be repeat of A level stuff with slightly added depth that is why A levels help. But other wise Uni is easy.

I do think geography is a micky mouse subject though.

Also if you stick your photo on a web site asking for a date the least you can expect is people to take the piss. Live with it.

Hey,

Hi all.

Cheers for all the information regarding what employers do and don't like about qualifications etc. I think I might study a degree in home economics, that would 0wn.

Cheers,

I really do hate to bring this up, as it involve cunting the f00 lads, but what the hell :).

The thread is titled "#quake2.uk cunts". Exor is a regular in #quake2.uk. And by his own admission, he is a cunt. So this thread has everything to do with him.

Glynn3rs, you are a thick shite. You will go far alright. You might even make it to Construction Site Gaffer one day. Possibly. Actually probably no. But I hear they are looking for rentboys in Edinburgh. I'd look into it if I were you.
