It should work RB, jsut be aware of your data allowance. Over on avforums people were moaning about Orange charging per megabyte when you went over their limit.

Yup, that's fucking bollocks and they have the audacity to call it unlimited. That's why I ended up ditching orange and going with t-mobile. I confirmed that when I go over the allowance they'll contact me, never charge.

Posting this from my hero btw, on screen keyboard is a bit fiddly but i'll get used to it. A bit laggy on the browser but hopefully the update will sort that.

Yes I am aware of the limit. Should be ok I would like the video to work on WIFI though.

Any idea why the Android app store won't show me a download button? It's a bit odd.

Also typing this on my hero. Not fast but functional.

It could be that orange have disabled access to certain apps, or that you need to unlock some bar on premium services (my cousin had to do this with t mobile on his g2)

Their unlimited is 500mb, I'm not sure how you could ever use that in a month on mobile internet? Unless you're watching loads of iPlayer stuff, but then shouldn't you be doing that over WiFi instead?

You can easily use over 500mb on the hero.

The problem with Orange is that it is not unlimited with fair use, or unlimited with a auto stop if you exceed limits, they just charge you automatically.

More or less echoing what Chet says, 500 is a lot for mobile browsing but I've read that it's not so hard to go over with the Hero. Also, it's just the wording - they call it unlimited, cap it at 500mb and then charge you for going over it. Surely that's in breach of the trade descriptions act or some such, it's not in *any* way unlimited. T-mobile have a fair usage cap of 1gb or 3gb depending on your plan, but it's actually unlimited, you just get speed capped if you breach the cap regularly.

Thanks Chilly, does anyone know if it works on the Orange network? What I found suggested it was Vodaphone and 3 only.

RB

Yep, I have beebplayer on an Orange Hero.

If you're in range of a public wifi it is truly fucking sweet.

Thanks G, that's good news. I've just got to work out how to get an app at all, still can't work out why there are no download or buy buttons on Android Market. The page looks like this from either my desktop or my Hero.

amarket.jpg

Where should the buttons be? Clicking the thumbnails just changes the preview bit but doesn't add any extra buttons for any app, paid for or free :(

That's weird, what happens when you go into the "all programs" selection screen and select "market"? That takes me to an android app that simply allows me to browse by category or search by name - click to download/install, job done.

I'm pretty sure you need a google email account linked to your phone to make use of the market. I've also read suggestions that it only works if you do it on the intro setup routine after a factory reset.

Could well be Nath, I did setup a Google mail account as part of the Hero setup and I also linked it back in when i did my ROM upgrade.

I cannot stress how important a ROM update is to those that are on an old(er) one.

That is because that is NOT the Android market place, that is just the web based preview. You need to use access the market using the provided "market" ap, their is a widget for it you can create a shortcut to on your home screen if you wish.

As the others said, you need a google account linked to your phone, due to a bug in the pre-update ROM, you need to do this during initial set-up of the phone. If you did not do this then, you need to do it after you install the new ROM, or do a factory reset of the phone. Either way you will lose any contacts, messages etc.

If I do a factory reset do I lose anything off my sd card or SIM? I've only had the phone a day and haven't done too much yet that I couldn't redo pretty quickly.

You don't lose anything off your SD card, only your contacts on the phone. Your contacts on the sim will stay. You will lose the messages.

You are better off upgrading to the latest HTC ROM available on the HTC site RB, the Orange branded version is there too. This will run through setup again when it is complete. (assuming your phone is not already on the latest version, go to menu > settings> about phone > build number. The new Orange version is 2.73.61.5 )

Or alternatively, now is the perfect time to migrate all your contacts over to Google Contacts, your phone and google will then sync,

He can't though, if he did not set up his phone with a google account on setup, a bug prevents him doing it now. Also to sync your contacts with google on the hero, they must be on google to start with. The only way around this is to download an ap to export the contacts to a .csv file on the SD card, then import that into googlemail via your PC. Then you can sync them. Either way, he is going to need to install a new ROm or factory reset.

Thanks Chet, the ROM is already the latest, I'll do a reset now before I set anything else up.

Oh yeah, the best app to export your contacts is "exportcontacts", it very quickly dumps your contacts into a .csv file on your memory card. It keeps all the contact detail including multiple numbers and the facebook, flickr and twitter links.

Worth doing for those of you with Hereo's, import to your googlemail account and never worry about loosing contacts again.

Shamelessly stolen from avforums, where I found RB lurking ;p

just spoke to HTC, this is for vodafone to increase ring time to 30 secs.

voda
on dialer
**61*121*11*30# then press call

for 02
**61*901*11*30# then press call

he said that after**61* enter your number you dial for VM, this will change the ring time.

tried it & it works.(y)

Nice tip, replace "121" or "901" with whatever shortcode orange or t-mobile use to access voicemail to replicate on the orange or tmob branded hero.

if you do a reset you can setup the google account at that point.

i rooted my hero then put on the cyanogen recovery rom, then did a nandroid backup, that way if it goes wrong and i have to send it back under warranty i can just put the original tmo rom back on it.

rooting it lets me have admin access over it, so i can run apps like the wireless tether, the modaco rom runs really fast, faster than the htc rom plus the signal is miles better and battery life is much better, its a bit scary doing the rooting but theres lots of guides about.

oh and the data limit with tmo is 3 gig fair usage, pisses all over the orange 500 meg, i used 500 meg the other day at my mates watching youtube and streaming spotify on wireless tether as his broadband was down. the guy at tmo said he had never heard of anyone getting charged for going over the limit either.

I am tempted to be honest, doing it via the backup route as suggested. But I am going to wait to see what the next official update with android 2.0 brings to the table.

That's if you get the Hero through T-Mobile. I bought mine offline and got a sim-only deal with "unlimited" net through TMo and I get a 1gb FUP. Still, that's more than enough and as you say, totally shits over Oranges crap service.

Quick Question for Hero owners one of the things i like about my magic is that i have all 3 screens set up for a different purpose with widgets and apps. When i played with the Hero i did not get a chance to check properly but can you turn the Sense UI of and go back to 3 screens? I have an upgrade soon i might get a Hero.

No idea if you can turn the screens off, but you can fully customise all 7 screens, and you don't have to use all 7, you can leave them blank if you want. It come's with preset "scenes" but you can customise and add extra one's if you want.

Yup, the Hero is designed to behave like the Google Android native system but with more screens. It is possible (or it was) to go back to the basic android screens by killing the SenseUI overlay with a taskkiller.

Heh, you did find me lurking there, and I can't get this to work :(. I get 'invalid MMI code or connection error' message.

Very tempted with the Motorola Milestone, it's the European version of the Droid and comes with Android 2.0 and multitouch. Expansys exclusive atm, and no stock though.
