I guess it's a case of each to their own, I shall stay well away from winmo personally. Orange launch the Iphone in the next 2weeks, will be interesting to see what price wars we have.

None, Apple set the price of Iphone tarrifs, not the networks. If they want the Iphone they have to do what Apple say, Orange and T-mobile will only offer better prices on tariffs if Apple say they can, and that means o2 will offer exactly the same.

HTC make quality phones, they're going to run WinMo and Android and any other OS that they think is of note (I'm sure if apple released iPhone OS that'd be on a HTC eventually).

As for the Pre, I've liked some of what I've seen and hated some of what I've seen but logically this gizmodo article speaks the truth imho. Plus Palm are getting spanked out of iTunes on a regular basis. They should do the smart thing and integrate with Songbird or similar and try to build a "nerd" userbase imho.

After seeing that its rumoured to have 32Gb of storage, I have decided to wait for the Xperia X10. Full specs should be announced tomorrow, but it honestly does look like it's going to be the device to have over the next 6 months. I mean seriously, with (rumoured at this stage)

- 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor
- 8Mp SE Camera
- 32Gb Storage
- Android 2.0

and loads of other stuff, it is looking fucking uber. Add in teaser videos of what looks lke God's own UI, I am getting major wood in anticipation.

Good grief Bods, the UI isn't that amazing. It's very nice indeed, but fanboy much? :)

However, it does look good - I'll be interested to see when it's released. If it's soon enough I might skip the Hero.

Mate I've got a WinMo phone that interface looks utterly utterly divine, whilst avoiding the simplistic "DO YOU WANT TO SEND A TEXT MESSAGE" garbage Apple peddle. Mind you, I use my old W950 for work, which runs on UIQ. This was an OS SE made the standard for smartphones back in the day, but incomprehensibly abandoned in favour of WinMo for the Xperia. I use it sometimes and wonder to myself - SE, what the FUCK were you doing?

Hopefully this X10 will be a return to the good old days.

Well yeah, someone having a shit on your chest is better than using Windows Mobile, so in that respect the Sony/Android UI looks nice. I can't imagine the battery life will be up to much with a 1ghz processor though.

The HTC and SE guis tend to lack cohesion in my experience. One bit looks like sex on a stick, the next bit looks like Win3.1.

What about the new SE Satio?

It looks sexy, has awesome camera and gets good reviews. I know nothing about phones really but I do like SE.

Sony Ericsson Satio Product Review - Mobile Phones - CNET Asia

When I first heard about it I wanted one, but it's typical Sony. At first it was an iphone killer phone, and its slowly turned into a basic touchscreen phone with a good camera. Disappointed given the price of the handset.

Isn't every future phone a potential Iphone killer? yet when the phone is actually launched probably the only thing they have over the Iphone is the battery life and camera which i admit on the Iphone sucks ass.

Lets face it though the Iphone UI is second to none and the phone just looks brilliant, since i've had my Iphone i've not had that thought in my mind that i need a new phone when i see the next new one out.

I've had many many phones and for me i just love the internet on the Iphone hell don't even switch my PC on anymore to browse the sites i usually go on because its just a tap away on the Iphone.

Apart from my 2 above the Iphone is a brilliant bit of kit yes its expensive but in the long run buying new phones all the time isn't that cheap either.

Based on the pre-production model the new Xperia X10 looks a bit shite to me.
Poor battery life and very sluggish UI...

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 announced, we go hands-on

I'll definitely give it a miss...

You said it yourself; pre-production. This won't arrive until the middle of 2010, so making judgements about it now is pretty premature. Its certainly a nice-looking thing; and the UI (sorry, "UX") looks promising.

They are all a bit of a waste of time to me really, none of them do anything as good as a dedicated unit. Camera, rubbish, web browsing, rubbish, music player, rubbish, email, rubbish, gaming, rubbish. I buy an all singing all dancing phone and within a week or so all I use it for is phoning and texting.

Unless anything that is actually good comes out then I am going to go for the cheapest crappiest phone on the market.

Oh and the I-phone is donkey turd, just like any I-product, over priced well marketed junk.

Oh aada - sorry for the last comment; it's just that any thing you like cannot have any fault. You rave about things you buy like no one could possibly hate them.

Hopefully they will buck their usual trend and get it out in time Q1 as promised, but bearing in mind how late the x1 was i doubt it. Hopefully they will get it running 2.0 rather than 1.6 though before it ships. It is a slight concern that the custom ui will constrain it to future releases as Google are pushing the quick updates on the os which is one of the big appeals to me.

I'm tempted to get the european version of the Droid though (even though they've given it a stupid name over here) but they seem incapable of announcing the UK carrier even though it is released in the rest of europe in a weeks time :(

What about the new SE Satio?

It looks sexy, has awesome camera and gets good reviews. I know nothing about phones really but I do like SE.

Sony Ericsson Satio Product Review - Mobile Phones - CNET Asia

Very VERY tempted by one of these. As you say awesome camera, awesome music player, reviews look pretty good. Don;t see why it's rumoured as an iPhone killer, that's SE's upcoming "My First Camera Phone", with an interface for people who are too stupid to work a proper phone.

Anyway just cos it's funny making Aada look like a tit.

1) iPhone UI second to none. This is completely and woefully incorrect. It might make some tasks easier (such as the deepy complicated business of dialling a number and pressing the green button - it's rocket science I tell thee), it makes loads of other normal phone tasks a pain in the arse. Want delivery reports? Operator code before the text pls. Want to bluetooth a song to a mate? There's an app for that. Want to use your phone one handed? You're fucked.

2) iPhone looks brilliant. No it doesn't. It's too big, makes you look like you only buy shiny things and needs more than one button on the front. In fact to be honest, it looks like shit.

3) Cheaper than buy new phones all the time. Most new phones that come out (which you can only really buy every 18 months) don't cost going on for a grand for a phone with less features than the others (see point 1). So no, you aren't cheaper.

4) Brilliant bit of kit. It isn't really. See points 1, 2 and 3, add in the shit camera and woeful battery life and speaker, also the fact if the battery dies you are fucked, and no, it really isn't a brilliant bit of kit. Briliantly marketed possibly, but the hardware itself?

Dog toss. Of the highest order. Now shusht Aada, adults are talking.

Oh and the X10 looks lush. Bit dissapointed it didn't have 32Gb of storage on board, but bear in mind everything else, I think I can cope. Just need to decide betweent hat and the Satio.

I've had the HTC Hero for about two weeks now, so here are my opinions.

Positives:

- the handset design is masterpiece, feels and looks like a B&O piece of hardware, love the Teflon coating on the back, so much more stylish than the fingermarked iPhone (the Clitoris phone - every cnut has one)
- multitasking apps, press and hold 'home' to bring up an 'alt tab' to flick between them, unlike the iPhone
- can replace battery with a performance one that holds more charge, unlike the iPhone
- email client does HTML, seems pretty good so far, used it a fair amount to pickup and reply to emails on the move
- web browsing is actually a lot better than I thought it would be
- interface is brilliant once I got used to it, however i'd say touchscreen phones were marmite
- customisable desktops, seven of them! save one as a "scene", have multiple "scenes" so you can load in a "work" setup then a "play" setup with a whole different set of shortcuts and desktop widgets. I love having quick switches to WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth on my homescreen to I can flick them on and off quickly
- sync your phonebook with someone's facebook and flickr - I now have updates all in one place so I can pick one person and phone / text / email / facebook them all from one location. Email and SMSs are also nicely threaded.
- plenty of decent little applications available in the Market
- interface and response is slick and fast
- big bright screen
- can select a querty or traditional phone keypad for data entry, switched to qwerty when you rotate it; nice touch
- google maps and the autorotating streetview as you move the phone is fucking sweet
- using data based apps (web, email etc.) seems very fast indeed, much quicker than on my old N95 but that is probably more Orange than the phone
- hands free / speakerphone is much clearer than the N95, so car use is good
- the official HTC Hero car kit is solid, well made and compliments the phone well - it fits like a glove. Recommended highly if you are on the move with the Hero

That's about it so far...

Negatives:

- battery life is utter fucking pish. Full charge at 8am, needs charged by 8pm. I turned off a lot of the background data applications, removed email polling by setting it to manual. I now manage to scrape 2 days tops out of it, I use it an above average amount i'd say. However, after looking on the web, it appears that all the smartphones are heavy on the battery
- no default data usage counter, had to get an app from the Market
- apps don't seem to exit properly, you need to manually kill them off to stop memory being leeched. Bit of a PITA I felt, no quick easy way to do it without (you guessed it) downloading a "task kill" app from the Market
- there has been a couple of occasions where it feels a bit sluggish, a quick reboot sorted that out
- camera may be 5 MP, but it sucks goat cocks. Then again, I think all cameraphones suck goat cock being an owner of a DSLR and a couple of prime lenses
- video recording sucks elephant cocks, not anywhere near as good as the N95. Don't care much for it though
- no flash, taking photos in the dark is like sucking goat cocks, whilst getting raped by an elephant cock. Then again, I never got it for the camera

I know that some of the positives aren't exclusive to this phone, so I'm sure someone will reply to this and say "ZOMG LOL Phone does it too" - but this is my experience and opinion so far. Oh yeah, any Hero tips most welcome; I read about ROM upgrades and other things on the web, but I don't have time to faff with it that much so if someone could summarise below, I'd appreciate it :).

I'm no iphone fan but I've yet to use a phone that works with MS exchange quite so well - i.e. set up and use. It *shits* all over blackberrys for it.

Oh, and G - do you have an Orange branded handset or a sim-free one? I'm sure I've asked this before but I forgot :p.

If you haven't done it already, you'll want to get the latest firmware from HTC (if you're on sim-free) or Orange if it's their phone. I think upgrading the software is piss easy but it may well factory wipe your phone, someone else should be able to give you more info.

But the simple fact about iPhones is the thing we all need if we are normal people, by that I mean a battery that lasts longer than a day. I have to charge my phone once a week and that pisses me off, how can you iPhone users ever relax if you are out and about? We went away this weekend and Samm asked if I had packed the phone charger, of course I hadn't there was no need.

I am sorry but in the grand scheme of things a good battery life is a must and actually so is a decent camera, and tbh, so are buttons :D

I use my iPhone for personal / work. I've had it 2 years and had no need to replace the battery so people really need to let that one drop. The "unlike the iPhone" phrasing just goes to show that's the benchmark anyway.

PS: I'm not a **** G, thanks though :p

PPS: Bodhi, if you just kept your wank flicks on your PC and stopped cracking one off at work, you wouldn't need to use your phone one handed :p :p

PPPS: The X10 looks quite nice, however I'm sure Sony will gash it before it arrives, like the PS3. Make.Believe = Make you believe you're gonna get X when actually you get Y.

But the battery only lasts 17 minutes Meg!!!!!!

Its fine if you are in an office or work at home but for normal everyday use or for people who are working in a field or on the moon it must be a fucking nightmare. I would seriously want one if the camera was better and the battery lasted at least 3 days.

SE are the daddies for good battery life I'm afraid, no one can deny that.

I agree I think its at least 10 days before you have to charge it.

Nokia have gone shat for battery life nowadays though.

The benchmark according to the Hoi Polloi; Apple are absolute masters of marketing, nothing more. Hats off to them.

The battery failing doesn't worry me, it's the ability to charge mutiple batteries and swap them out if you're unable to charge for a few days (I'm thinking camping, festivals, photography trips) - that makes the iPhone redundant right off the bat for me.

So you say, I went away on a 2-day course up north, forgot my charger, thought it would die... didn't. I'll give you that the camera is shit though, because, frankly, it is.
