As a user of a HTC running winmo 6.5 with Toch Flo over it in normal day to day activities you will go no where near default windows "that needs a stylus". If you use the phone for emails, text, phone calls, music, videos, pictures ect it is all handled by the UI, in most areas you will need to go about 3 levels down before you touch winmo. On the new versions of Touch Flo (HD2 uses 2.5 or Sense UI which is the same as the Hero) even the settings has been replaced by a HTC settings option.

Cheers for that.

Nath - convince me some more, that video makes it look like it'll make me ejaculate hands free.

Well, I watched some videos of the HTC Touch Dual, it looked smooth, swish and cool as fuck (back in the day). I got one and it turned out to be dogshit. Unfortunately no one can be told how shit Windows Mobile is... you have to see it for yourself.

On the HTC Hero I finally managed to update the rom with the latest HTC vanilla release and its so much quicker now with lag all but gone... It's a right pain in the arse to do though. Got the T-mobile branded handset which was all but locked down and had to use something called the "gold card" method on unlockr to do it, a complex series of steps... but well worth is, phone is now rooted too.

Hopefully when T-mob get around to releasing android 2.0 to the masses people will get the phone performing like it should rather than suffering the crap bugs because they the company have to have branded software.

The t-mobile branded update isn't that bad though, my cousin has the t-mob version and I have the vanilla, and both work just as well.

Yip was from the official site, I am looking at a custom rom such as modaco but will have to do more research on that. It might have just been my phone but it was having quite bad lag problems but with the re-do it seems to have fixed my issues.

Just updated the rom on my Hero to the latest one from HTC's site - holy smoke, what a difference! Much quicker, much more slick than out-of-the-box, no more little bits of lag here and there, just rapido!

Very highly recommended.

Just to add to the much quicker touch responses, the battery life is also much improved, I put a full charge in at 7:30am this morning and I've still got 9 out of 10 bars green in battery status nearly 12 hours later.

An just to add this I've had a play with a Satio. Seems like a Nokia 5800 with a much nicer interface and a corking camera. Highly recommended if you just want a damn good cameraphone.

I got a Nokia 5800 (xpress music) the other week. I like it.

Im thinking about getting the 5800 aswell. I lost my ipod a few days ago, and the 5800 seems to be the best replacement if you just want a touch mobile for music. (I really don't need 90% of what the iphone and the other phones offer)

Yeah same, that's why I went for it. It does pretty much all I want, although browsing the internet isn't quite perfect on it, either via its own browser or Opera Mini. There are some apps for it but they're mostly shit. Whatever you do replace the godawful nokia headphone they chuck in for free, they're incredibly bad. The camera's not great either, and the interface isn't perfect but it's a solid bit of kit.

On great things if you do root the Hero is the Wireless Tether app, set up a wireless ad-hoc network or bluetooth connection from the phone and connect a laptop, desktop etc and utilise the phones normal 2G, 3G, HSDPA connection for internet browsing :), no extra bolt on pack required, although you are breaking the terms and conditions of the network but meh, who cares as long as you're sensible it's bloody useful.

I've just got myself a T-mobile sim only deal and will be looking to back it up with a Hero shortly. I don't suppose any of you lot know a good place to get it offline? Best I can find is around £360 for it but there must be other places that are better.

£360 is a fair price. Not seen it much cheaper than that.... unless you could get a t-mobile branded pay as you go one? I know the orange branded one's sell for £330 ish.

NEVAR! I want to be able to swap networks (which is why I went for a 30 day contract) and most importantly I don't want to have to wait for Orange/TMob to get their arse in gear every time HTC release an update.

I *really* want to get the thing like yesterday but I can't help but think I could save a fair whack if I wait til after chrimbo.

You don't have to though nath, jsut root it and install the standard HTC updates or the custom roms.

Hrmm, isn't that a bit of a faff? Aside from voiding the warranty which would concern me a bit, I'm assuming I'd need to find squiffy means of installing the standard updates as the serial number wouldn't be valid on their system?

Also, does rooting the phone network unlock it too?

Now have Hero and am having much fun so far. Thank you for the recommendation.

One thing though. No media shows on the BBC Sport site. Is there any way to show video and listen to audio on there? The youtube thing works fine.

Thanks Chilly, does anyone know if it works on the Orange network? What I found suggested it was Vodaphone and 3 only.

It should work RB, jsut be aware of your data allowance. Over on avforums people were moaning about Orange charging per megabyte when you went over their limit.
