whats the samsung galaxy s like then?

ive done some reading up, seems to get fairly good reviews, although i hear battery life isnt very good?

Do you use GPS? if so don't bother it doesn't work will say your 'there' but really your anything up to 100 miles away.

After Froyo my Galaxy felt really slow and slugging when texting so i cashed in while i could my Unlocked/unbranded Galaxy went for £330 on Tuesday got me a HTC Trophy now quite liking it too.

I only have a £10 a month sim only tarriff never going back to nasty 24 month contracts.

i wont be using gps no.

I really dont know which phone to choose lol, really do like the look of winmo7, but the lack of expandable memory is pfft lol

so im leaning towards htc desire hd (bit too pricey) or galaxy s, unless i really can be convinced on windows 7.

im buying sim free aswell btw, my contract dont end till july next year :(

I've got one and posted my impressions a bit earlier in the thread, basically a great phone, but needs a bigger battery and a few software updates (this is mostly fixed now).

Nost smartphones struggle beyond 1 day, the desire HD needs a charge when I go to bed, and I don't use it too heavily.

Chaps,

Thought I'd do a little review of my X10 now I've had it for a week or two, overall I'm very pleased with it. I have a couple of grumbles, but we'll come to them...

The Good

First of all the screen is lush. I know it's not an AMOLED screen, but it's obviously a top of the line TFT, as colours and detail are superb. It obviously drinks a bit of battery being older technology, but it is still a joy to look at.

I'm also coming round to the capacitive touchscreen, which annoyed me slightly at first, as I used my fingernails on my old Satio and it worked fine. My fingers aren't as accurate, so I NEED to use the keyboard in landscape mode. Now I've got used to it it's fine, just takes me longer to text than it did on my Satio.

I'm a big fan of Timescape, it makes a cracking automated diary, keeping a log of what you have used the phone for the last 24 hours. It's a bit sluggish at first as it downloads status updates from Failbook, but after that it's fine.

The apps side of things is pretty good as you can imagine. It makes a cracking travel companion, with Google Nav, Trapster and GPS Speedo, and I'm especially impressed with Google Nav. It seems a better satnav than a TomTom in all honesty, which seems ridiculous considering it's free.

I love the design of it too, somehow smoother and more interesting than the iPhone and HTC offerings, I still think it's a cracking looking bit of kit. Just a shame the screen is such a smudge magnet.

Other good bits - Camera, Sound Quality, Call Quality, Reception.

The Meh

Battery life isn't the best, needing charged every night. Sadly this seems fairly typical these days, still it is a minor annoyance. I do get a good days use out of it tho, with Bluetooth always on, lots of internet browsing and a bit of GPS use. It will also happily outlast my Satio, so at least things are moving in the right direction.

Mediascape is fairly average. Not terrible, but not as good as the cross media bar one on the Satio.

The Bad

I got it through Vodafone, and they are being ***** about giving us the 2.1 update that Orange and T-Mobile customers are enjoying. They are being worryingly cryptic over when they are releasing it. It seems to be being delayed so they can install their shite on it (Vodafone 360) which isn't even compatible with the fucking phone in the first place (It has Timescape to do that). However if they don't get their fingers out I will simply debrand it and enjoy 2.1 and HD video recording.

The speaker isn't very loud, meaning I can't hear posh Jane giving me directions over my car stereo. However, headphones seem to do the trick here.

Overall I'm happy with it. It might not be the most advanced smartphone out there, but it sure is the best looking. I also find its' unique features (corking camera, Timescape) more than make up for the lack of 2.2.

Bodhi, use your phone as a media player in your car. The track will auto silence whenever the sat nav wants to give you directions.

So my liveview (secondary bluetooth programmable display/remote for android phones) arrived. I'm using it in the wristwatch mount. It's charging at the mo, but I'll give some impressions later.

It's SE gear though, so bods will buy one, once he gets android 2+! ;)

Got mine on amazon.

Interesting gagdet, but needs some developers writing plug-ins. Example is that it can change the volume in a music player, but no previous/next track. Guess that's setup for the SE app by default.

The watch strap is crap, I'll be replacing it with a better one.

Next year probably, although I'd expect SE to skip it and go straight for 2.3 when the X12 comes out. Haven't found anything in 2.2 I really want yet though, so meh.

JIT = up to 400% performance increase on everything. If you don't want that, you're nutso :D.

Performance is fine on 1.6 tbh, when I get round to updating I will tell you of any improvements 2.1 brings.

Anyway in the pub just I figured out what the deal is with the X10. Rather than being another "me too" Android phone, it's a SonyEricsson that happens to run on Android.

P.S Angry Birds works fine on 2.1.

P.P.S My missus has just had an X10 Mini Pro. Bloody hell they are cracking little bits of kit. Most of the finctionality of my full fat X10, much smaller, and with a decent keyboard. If I was a woman it would be my next phone.

My brother just got the Orange San Francisco - HTC (I think) rebranded android 2.1 payg phone for 99 quid.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked at how good it is. Not just for the money, but fullstop. It's faster than my modified HTC Hero, has a great AMOLED capacitive screen, GPS, accelerometer and proximity sensor. I actually want one for myself now, the only question is how easy it is to unlock to use with my O2 sim.

THOROUGHLY recommended to anyone who wants an exceptionally reasonably priced smartphone that does, well, everything any of the others do.

It looks as though it may be *very* easy to unlock. Seriously considering buying one of these :).

I got the gf an SF. Superb, amazing piece of kit for the money. I even prefer its more compact size to my desire. I unlocked hers with a key from fleabay for £3.99 I think you can get the unlock codes even cheaper.

I can't recommend this phone enough

It's camera is pretty dire...

Apart from that it pretty much does everything. The processor is not as good as the Nexus/Desire though...so may be a bit slower

The screen, although a bright AMOLED is apparently not as sharp as the desires.

The X10 is fucking uber now Vodafone got their fingers out and released the update. Even snappier than before, they've sorted the text keypad out and stuff like Winamp and Angry Birds run like a charm.

SE have also confirmed that multitouch is on its way (not that I'm bothered as I hate pinch to zoom - needs two hands on the phone, which sucks, ergonomically speaking), which I'm hoping means a 2.2 update will be packaged in with it.

Basically, the haters can fuck off, my phone rocks :p

2.3 is out. Apparently available now for nexus one users.

Wonder when HTC will release it for the Desire HD.
