Apparently they are reducing the cost of the Orange SF next week so I'll see!

Where is your source for that? I am thinking of buying my GF the SF in the next few weeks, so any price reduction is a bonus :)

A friend of mine said the sales guy in the Orange shop said they are reducing the price next week...

No other confirmation of this unfortunately...easy way to find out is to wait till next week!

I'm on a budget so don't have a lot to spend but what do you guys think of the HTC Wildfire? Could get it on a contract with 600 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internets for £20 a month.

It's a decent handset. Basically a hero in a desire body.

What is the length of that contract 12, 18 or 24 months?

Nope. IF you can get it on 18 or even, the ultimate 12 month, go for it. On a 24 month contract you should be able to get a galaxy or desire if you pay around £50 towards the handset.

Ah but I don't have the spare monies to pay extra for the handset. I can probably knock it down to 18 months with a loyalty bonus,

The wildfire isn't worth signing up to a 24 month contract for. Save some monies and wait a couple of months if you must. Remember mobile networks do January "sale" offers too....

* - Note by this we actually mean something like 1000.
** - Note by this we mean either some limit like 500MB, or if not that a 'Fair Usage Policy' applies.

Depends which mobile company it is of course ;). Orange are particularly bad for advertising 'unlimited texts' when it actually has a well-defined numerical limit.

Mobile companies - redefining the meaning of words for fun and Profit for well over a decade now.

I could always repeat a rumour I heard about how o2 have an upper limit for their 'unlimited texts' bundles which was supposed to be 3200 for a month, but constant high-usage marks of 2000+ warranted a phone call from sales to investigate moving the excessive texter to a more viable tariff to give them money.

Of course it may not be true now and entirely fabricated by individuals who used to work for a contracted 3rd party affiliated with o2. ;)

While I remember, if you are on an o2 Simplicity PAYG sim and put over £20 of credit on every month you could be expecting a sales call from "o2" soon trying to entice you onto simplicity 12m contracts or even fully fledged o2 contracts.
(this is from a mate who works for said company who saw my details in their callers database when doing "pruning" for current contract customers)

I fail to see the problem with this. A business trying to upsell customers so they can make money? Whatever next?

So my new desire HD should be waiting for me when I get home. What's involved in migrating between android handsets these days?

Easy peasy. google for your contacts. SMS backup and restore app for your sms's. Copy your memory card contents across for anything else (just make sure the folder structure is the same).

Thanks for that. I plan on using the same card, hopefully this won't cause issues!

a piling steam of shit?

I do worry about you Bodhi, buying an inferior, out of date phone simply because of the branding.

I just looked at the experiences of people at work with the respective phones. I weighed up the opinions of the 3 happy X10 owners, the 2 happy Desire owners, and the 2 people whose Desire were back with HTC having their power button fixed, and thought, "Ooooh might as well have the SE then".

Only neagtive I have heard from people who actually own an X10 is poor battery life, which (unfortunately) you kinda expect these days.

Let me get this straight, you've just purchased a phone with 1.6 android?

Are you out of your frickin' mind?

Software can be upgraded, dull, uninspiring hardware cannot.

I can be, doesn't mean it will be though. I don't think you understand how inferior 1.6 is to 2.2...

Won't be on 1.6 for long, and even 1.6 is an upgrade from S60 Touch. Last I read 2.1 is due out this week, and further updates have been promised. Can't say I'm especially bothered about being bleeding edge, and I prefer the look of SE's UI.

Horses for courses really imo.

Less about that than compatibility with apps and performance. The JIT compiler that comes with 2.2 improves performance by as much as 400%.

Lol, sony fanboys!

So I've got it pretty much all setup now, the only thing I lost was my MP3 playlists. I guess I need a better app for music!

It's a nice phone, the screen is great and it feels solid. Not too sure about the sense ui though, I think I prefer the default android one, but it may grow on me.

Now I send the nexus one back to HTC to get the power button repaired. Then I'll flog it.

Nath, please remember that while Bodhi is normally pretty sane, he turns into Toht when Sony is mentioned :)
