This thread is actually putting me off ever buying an Android handset tbh. I prefer to spend my time actually using my phone to call, text and browse, it appears with these cheap Chinese knockoffs you lot are buying you spend your time masterbating over what version of the software you use? I mean does it really matter?
Then just don't do it.
You can just buy the phone and go along with the manufacturers default software. You'll still get updates for things like Google Maps, and various other bits of software. You can still replace the default software which is installed and doesn't get updated with 3rd party apps, if you don't like your SMS, dialer, or one of the other internal apps.
Just make sure you get a phone with Android 2.2, or at least one where the manufacturer/operator has guaranteed an update to 2.2. Getting anything with an older version is like buying a loaf of bread which is already a week old.
