So my Nexus one has developed the powerr button problem (it only works about 1 in 4 times, which is annoying as it's the button that unlocks the screen). The problem is that it has to be sent back to HTC for repairs, 7-14 working days!

I guess I'll have to get some crappy phone to tide me over while it's repaired.

My desire has been with HTC for 20 days now, some strike somewhere in the far east is their excuse, parts shortage. They have a backlog off over 2000 jobs according to the people I have spoke too.

So got my Desire back after 25 days or so the other day. My god, it's soo fast now. Whatever fault my phone had, it was clearly not working to spec from day 1. Feels like I've upgraded to a new phone again.

Has it gone from 2.1 to 2.2?

Yes, but I had gone to 2.2 before anyway. It's ridiculously faster.

TM taking so long to get 2.2 out the door has resulted in me using goldcard+RUU update method, although shame the backup utility is disabled with 2.2.

ANy one know of any problems via the goldcard method?

I goldcarded a mates T-Mobile Desire a few weeks ago. Was fiddly to get it sorted because the new bootloader wasn't a bit different to the HTC Hero's haxx0rated one but we muddled through and got a rooted 2.2 on there. Went from about 5mflops to 25 :D. Follow the numerous guides out there and you'll be fine Emb.

Oh I've done it and it wasn't hard just before I start entering in data again on it I'm trying to find out if there is some sort of problem with it. My Desire now gets 33-34 mflops and doesn't seem to have the usual TM stuff dumped on it, also means quicker updates.

Ahh I see. Well yeah, no the rooted roms are just that, standard rom but rooted so you shouldn't have any problems.

Grab yourself Titanium Backup from the market it's a good way to keep your data backed up and makes wiping/upgrading a piece of cake as you're back up and running so quickly.

Yeah seen that app but that looks like it is for rooted phones.

Got the TM RUU file if I do run into issues just really want to avoid sticking that back on :p

Surely if you've GoldCarded then you do have a rooted phone?

Eh no, you can goldcard to install a normal ROM, so the stock froyo rom for example and debrand and branded handset.

Rooting is an option, not one that dys appears to have taken.

Oh, well bloody ell, go for a rooted but otherwise unchanged rom. No reason not to!

Are you sure that using that goldcard technique doesn't also? And anyway it's as easy to unroot as it is to root.

Not on the desire apparently, if you root then your phone is permanently marked as having been rooted. Or according to those on avforums anyway.

I did try a root method (Superuser) but went removed it and went back to orginal via RUU, the GC tends to fit my needs a bit more and seems a lot less hassle plus it provides benefits I actually wanted.

I have rooted but I've not as yet installed any custom roms!

This thread is actually putting me off ever buying an Android handset tbh. I prefer to spend my time actually using my phone to call, text and browse, it appears with these cheap Chinese knockoffs you lot are buying you spend your time masterbating over what version of the software you use? I mean does it really matter?

Not unless you're interested in that sort of thing. No one is forcing anyone to fuck about with their phone software. I'm sure if tinkering makes you feel uncomfortable, or if you're worried you might break your phone because you're afraid of a command prompt then the standard software that comes with the phone would be more than adequate for you.

Because, yknow, you're a bit of a pussy with these things :D.

It's wouldn't be if Vodafone didn't have such a wanky App Store. Still judging by iTunes I'm not sure if I miss having 17 Random Fart Generators and a lightsabre.

You couldn't do it though. Not unless the Daily Mail ran a feature on it of course!
