Oh which reminds me, if anyone else wants a working version of swype, PM me your email address. ST^ did, and he said it's the most brilliant thing ever.

Oh fuck me the Android market is so god damn annoying. Why can't I search on there, there is no option to search for a specific app. Am I missing something?

Email me Swype please sweetheart.

Yes, you spacker!

To initiate a search within any app, or initiate a google search from the home screen, simply press the "search key", this is the key next to the back key along the bottom of your phone, the one with the magnifying glass symbol. Or simply press the magnifying glass button on the top right of the market.

Ah you see, I am on my laptop, downloading stuff to lappy then syncing with the phone to install the cheese.

Nah don't do it that way, android marketplace is set up to work from your phone. You can't search or download from the official website for android. Only ever download apps from the net if you trust the source.

Struggling here.

Got Swype and tried both files initially but have now gone back to the smaller file. Its installed and I can change the options in it etc but it isn't on when typing a text. Do I need a font manager thingy?

Also where is the bloody SD card storage folder on these phones, cannot find it anywhere, all I can find to do with it is to 'unmount' thats all. I want to find it and go into the folders within the SD.

Gah :(

Click and hold on an input field and it'll come up with a menu. Choose "Input Method". Then you can switch to Swype.

Do you have a file manager? The SD card is /sdcard

Yeah, it's excellent.

And the working one for the Desire was the com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk file, btw.

Oh trem, it's the larger file, my bad!

But yes to enable it, you need to select it as the default input method, do what ST^ said.

When you connect your phone to PC, select unmount SD card/ usb drive option. The SD card will come up as a new device/drive on your computer.

I like Swype so much that when they eventually put it on sale, I'll probably pay for it. I never actually got used to HTC's portrait keyboard -- I spent more time correcting mistakes than typing my message. Landscape mode was 'ok', but not great. Not like this. :D

I now send all my SMS's via voice recognition, it's so close to perfect that it's *much* faster than typing on screen and I bet loads faster than swype too :D.

Cheers chum, but....and bear with me here......but where the bloody fuck is the input field?

What I meant was where is it on my phone? Do I need a file manager app like ST mentioned or is there a shortcut directly to it?

The bit where you click to bring the keyboard up

To mount your USB connect it to you PC and you will get a notification in the top bar on your phone. Drag that down and Click USB and you should have the mount option there.

An input field being anywhere you can type text, like an SMS, search box or whatever.

Nope still not getting it.

I click on that bar and drag it down but that just gives me the option to change connection type. When connected as a usb drive to my pc I can browse the phone but there is no /sd card folder anywhere there either. All I want is to go into the sd card folder on my phone rather than having to connect it to PC, the pc option to browse the sd card is also wanted but initially I just want to save stuff, browse stuff and install stuff from the SD just using my phone.

I get the feeling, once again, I am missing something here.

Also where do photos get saved to, is it on the card or on the phone?

Sorry i mis understood. Look in the Market Place for Astro File Manager. I May be wrong but i don't think Android has one by default. This should let you browse the SD Card

Ta luv.

Now one other thing, I may of broke something. You know the awesome thing when you browse the web and you want to zoom, the thing where you spread your fingers over a page to make it bigger or smaller, well that isn't working now :( totally gutted because I can't see a fucking thing on the phone screen now :(

Does Swype mess with any of those settings for the finger spread thing?

I have had that on a couple of the Desires here and a full reboot tends to fix it.

I've experienced loss of multi-touch two or three times so far. Kinda weird. Had to reboot each time.

So I passed Swype on to my brother, who has a Hero. It installs fine and the keyboard shows up and works if you hit the keys, but swyping doesn't work. You can't select a language in the Swype options, so it looks like it can't find a dictionary. Is that a fault with the apk package?

Trem: When you connect your phone to your PC, you are browsing the SD card, it does not let you browse the phone memory. As soze said, you need astro file manager to do it from your phone.

If you install any alternative input method it disabled multi-touch until you reboot.

The versions I gave you were for the desire and nexus one. He needs the low res version for the hero. The version you had before that did not work for you, that should work on his hero.

Also I would happily pay £5 for swype, brilliant input method, and nath - faster than voice to text once you get to grips with it.

I find that hard to believe, Chet, given that so far I've not needed to correct anything from voice recognition. I should check some video demonstrations to see how quick it actually is.

How do you get voice to text working well? Speak slowly? Naturally? Long pauses between words?

Everything I've tried so far gives me probably 50% or less of my words coming out correctly :<

I talk clearly, concisely and at an *ever* so slightly slower rate than normal. Still I think the main thing is that I'm frightfully middle class so perhaps you common bastards simply aint talkin proper like wot?

Oh mega thanks to Nath for helping me root my Hero and get Android 2.1 + Villain ROM working :) - it's pretty much identical to the functionality on the missus' Desire, although not as snappy performance wise.

I actually decided to go for speed over functionality after a few days with the Villain ROM. Though Villains seems to run as well if not a little bit better than the stock 1.5 ROM, the MoDaCo custom 1.5 ROM is ludicrously fast and fluid, I think I'll stick with this one for now. It's soooooo good.

Is it worth getting a class 6 micro SD card for my Desire? Does it improve anything?

Presently got a class 2 in it.

It might speed up access time for photos and music, but have you noticed that it's a bit slow to load them? If not, I wouldn't bother tbh.

It may be worth it once android is updated to allow the installation of apps to SD card, or you've rooted to allow the same. Otherwise, don't bother, unless you are getting off the back of a truck prices.
