Maybe they can shelve the work on the hero update to speed the process?

No! :twak:

But I hope they get their act together in updating all their phones though, I'm sure Desire owners won't be very happy if they can't get 2.2 quickly though.

If that 450% performance improvement would actually improve speeds on other devices such as the hero, I would be most chuffed indeed. Though of course it'd be another 3 bazillion years before HTC get round to releasing it.

Perhaps XDA devs will get it out there for the Hero and things will perform nicely.

Well I get 6.9 MFLOPS at the moment, although the speed increase will naturally only affect things in certain areas but it would be welcome along with some of the other changes esp if they include wireless N driver.

I suspect the update for the Desire will be out quicker than the Hero update.

Got my unlocked and none branded Desire from Three today :D. Fuck me its going to take a year to get my head around it :(

Mega impressed with the touch screen and the speed of everything, it really is silky smooth to use.

Anyone have a link to a retards guide on using all the features, the manual that came with it is AIDS ridden.

Whelp, I've finally gotten round to rooting and installing a Villains rom, 5.5 to be precise. Time to see what all the Android 2.1 fuss is all about :D.

So far so good, I'm on 2.1 and it's performing rather well. Voice search is looking good :D, navigation is up and running. Super :D

Well this is fantastic i'm currently using the voice dictation system and it works perfectly. The built in web browser is much faster than it was on the old system, and as you may have guessed i'm using the dictation system to create this message. I'm quite happy to stick with my htc hero now.

Nath, can you post some info and links on this ROM?

I read somewhere that I can't load custom ROMs now that I've added a particular HTC ROM, is this true or can I still apply this ROM?

Nah, even if you have the latest ROM from HTC you can still haxxorate it. The walkthrough I used is here:

How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More - Android Forums

Follow that through, the only problem I had was when it came to Titanium Backup, it refused to work as the root method in that article didn't work 100%. Following comments further in the thread, I used an alternate root method here:

xda-developers - View Single Post - Rooting the HTC Hero/G2..(success)

Keep in mind, if you've gone through the instructions from the first link and find you need to use the root method from the second link, due to what you've already done you need only do steps: 1,2,3,4,6,7 - avoiding step 5 as you've already done the recovery shenannigans. Get me on MSN if you need some more help but it really is pretty straight forward. PM me if you need my MSN details, pretty sure you've got them though.

Ok so this is a two step process:

1) The above mentioned, 'rooting' the phone

2) Load this Villain ROM onto the rooted phone (using...?)

?

Mine lasts about 1.5 full days. I can't ever see it stretching to 2. I have my email and twitter syncing all day, and use the web on it heavily for about an hour each day. Not too many calls or texts.

Wish it lasted longer but meh... this is how phones are these days.

charge every night as I did with the hero, I use it as a phone a LOT for work, and when driving I use the GPS (massive drain), but it's usually plugged in when driving.

The battery did perform better after 10 charges or so.

nath; voice to text is brilliant ain't it? With a combination of that and swype, I can enter text very very quickly.

The other thing I've noticed with the Desire is the battery life status isn't exactly perfectly, basically the status seems to slow down the lower it gets.

All the usual should be done when away from home such as disabling wifi etc.

You on a Desire ST^? You can download a hacked swype from the swedish pirates, lots of links on mediafire as well. I can't remember which one I am using now.

Voice to text: Add Full Voice to Text To Android Phones Nimbu

Got voice to text working, thanks. Though it obviously hates my voice as I can't produce anything but gibberish.

I found a swype apk somewhere, complains that the screen size doesn't match the installed version -_-

And yeah, it's a Desire.

You've got the version of swype for hero resolution screens, you need the version for the desire and nexus one res.

PM me your email address. I'll wizz you a copy over when I find my file.

Don't rely too much on speech to text. Look at Trem's sig.

It'll go much longer if you turn wifi off.

A day with the Desire now and fuck me how sexy are they?

Its just like.....they have got everything right with it, I was dubious about the whole touch screen mini PC idea but it really is amazing in every way, I am still on about 10% of knowing what it can do but so far I am very impressed.

I reckon when I stop playing the battery will last 2-3 days (I don't *use* the phone much for calls).

Nope, the battery will never last 3 days, you maybe able to push 2 days if you don't use any data or apps at all.

Do you want to give swype a try? Have you had a look at the android apps thread here for some suggested apps and enabled the voice to text stuff?

If you look at the android apps thread, focus on the last 3 or 4 pages, as apps have come and got shit since then.

definitely get Handcent SMS as an alternative messaging app.

I've stopped using wavesecure, and I think they charge new users now? Going to have a look for an alternative.
