So long as it's within an hour of finishing exercise. And not too much, the calories do still count.

I don't know if there's a diff between a shake and plain old regular choccy milk. Also, like Gumbo says: sugar is sugar and fat is fat. If I wasn't on keto right now I'd supplement my pre-gym protein / complex carb shake with a post gym glass of plain old regular chocolate milk. Say...300ml or so.

about a pint then. tbh seems like a lot to me, though that said I'm basically living off water (to drink) and anything that is not water seems excessive.

all the MTB fiends I know swear by choccy milk, lads. (they usually have cake with theirs though)

Fags.

Just done the Monsal Trail (and back) in the snow and sleet with the missus. Was f00king freezing.

Of course, like any proper human being we went straight to the pub afterwards and then to the chippy.

Milk shakes. Pah!

afaict every man and his dog seems to laud the chocolate milk (low fat) except for the uber duber hard core people who roll their own thing with magic powders and such.
as to how much you should consume, I guess that depends on how often you work out, and if you notice any ill effects from drinking it. you could experiment (a glass, two, glasses, etc) and tell us of your findings. Myself I am actually curious as towards the summer I will be biking more and coming off the keto.

You need to be really careful w/ your carb intake coming off keto. Like super careful.
I did one week off keto while expending tons of energy ( skiing ) and I put 10lbs on. ( 8lbs came off in 1.5 days after I got back though ).

aye, I'll take it real slow tbh. I've already started carb-up days where I allow myself to have some. Like once a week, ECA. I intend to be back on a normallish diet come summertime.

although in the light of your comment: when I went to Iceland last year I threw the diet out the window: ate and drank everything in my path and lost a kilo :)

I used to split the Frijj over 2 days, the yazoo i'm on now is in 200ml bottles and seems to do the trick. Anywhere 200ml to 250ml should be fine. If I forget to stock up and run out then I get baaaad DOMS, it really works.

And do you train morning or evenings? I can't decide if early am or evening will be best.

I have to do evenings. If I got up to do mornings then my 5 year old would get up with me, need attention and it wouldn't work, although my preference would be mornings. I do it just as soon as I can after we get her down, which is between 6 and 7pm. This does mean eating a bit late, not too bad with the short workouts in Insanity, but Yoga night on P90x might mean not eating until after 9pm. This is a nono for fat loss, but better than not working out at all.

I could, perhaps at 5, or 4 with insanity, any closer to the workout and I'd spew. Eating that early though would still mean another meal though as I couldn't go from 4 or 5 in the afternoon until breakfast. This is why I'd rather do it in the morning, but the slightest sound at that sort of time and daughter would be up like a shot.

Ah right, I have dinner at 6 and will train at say 7, or maybe try and do at 5 in the morn.

Post workout at the weekends I have a latte as I go early morning :). I have had oats and grapefruit before I go and with my latte ill eat either a savoury oat galette or clean protein. I have been very slowly introducing carbs into my diet whilst increasing calories. Sometimes I completely fuck up due to not wanting to put on weight (negative calories), however I seemed to have found a balance in the last week which is helping me with my last few pounds. Since introducing carbs and hitting the gym I have lost 6kgs in c. 2 months. I managed to maintain over Christmas when I really indulged in carbs and then my weight slowly reduced (it probably would have been quicker if I had not decided that running on empty was a good idea....)

Is that not just water? I thought carbs had more water so when you come off keto you get a fast gain in weight.

For those of you who have low calorie days or keeping your carbs down, I finally used kelp noodles today and I have to say that they were bloody awesome.

Raw they are crunchy and they should be soaked for 10 to 15 mins regardless of whether they are cooked. I put mine in my home made Tom Kha Gai soup and they took up the flavours really well. A whole pack was just 18 calories and I am full.

No not just water, glycogen is stored in the body. Glycogen combines with water which is why when you eat carbs again there will be a gain, however not a fat gain. It will also come off again with exercise and good diet. Catherine only exception to this is if you are carb intolerant, most common in those with a predominantly endomorph body type. However being carb intolerant is not an excuse for being a lardarse!

It isn't just glycogen stores, insulin also triggers salt retention which causes water retention and is responsible for the large amounts of water weight you see lost on most diets ( even if you're eating carbs, if you start eating less your insulin levels will drop and so will your water weight ).

eg the week off keto when I was skiing, almost the entirety of the weight I put on that week was just water and it came right back off rapidly when I went keto on coming home.

Ran 2 miles yesterday on a treadmill while at hospital having physio and felt good. Going back in two weeks and have more exercises to do in between.
