Day 1 of insanity is just a fit test. Lasts about 30 minutes including warm up and cool down.

I'm broken...

Got it on my laptop, no where here has floors that can support mad amounts of jumping. I'd love a gym class to offer that tbh

My problem is low ceilings. I had to do some parts of p90x in a different part of the living room where the ceiling is higher so that I didn't bang my head or push weights up through the ceiling. I'll let you know how much jumping there is. You can get some pretty good mats designed for plyometric exercising too, but obviously I don't know your circumstances.

Day 2 of Insanity just finished. Yeah there's a lot of jumping in it. I don't think it would be very upstairs friendly. Awesome workout though. 547 Calorie burn in 40 mins and that's with me wussing out on about 10% as I'm a bit out of shape having not done anything for a week.

This is going to get me the fittest I've been, or kill me.

Did 38+ miles on my mountain bike today. According to Endomondo it's the longest ride I've done since September.

My back is fucking broken. Totally fucked. I've had a little pain in the back before when cycling but not like this :(

dude, you in a decent position on the bike? I thought you were reasonably sporty. Being wrecked after such a mild distance may mean you're forcing your seat and stuff.

btw, I'm out on the new bike tomorrow. I needs it :)

I did 200+ miles over 3 days on the same bike in the same position a couple of years ago - but I'd built up to it slowly and trained for it. Maybe my position needs looking at again though. I think my seat could be slightly lower than it should be.

It could also be that it's the first time I've ridden in anger for quite some time (I've done the odd 20-miler but not really since before xmas). The vast majority of the ride was offroad - though not particularly strenuous offroad - cycle path, mud tracks, some hills but not massive long pushes.

I guess the time off the bike has made me much less fit. The plan was to do 60 miles to see if I could still manage it. No way jose!

Need to find a good bicycle-fit (mountainbike) guide and get down with the proper measurements I guess. Any suggestions?

hmm not really without being able to...um...eyeball you. whereabouts in your back btw? low? mid?

only thing you certainly should not have is your saddle too high. that will certainly fuck you up as it will make your pelvis roll.

Low back. Could be that the seat is too low or slightly too far forward.

Been looking - there's a lot of stuff on the web. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do some measurements.

This and this are useful - it's just taking the time to go through with 'em properly again. Prolly with a friend.

I could, of course, pay for a proper fitting. But that's prolly taking it too far :)

paying is well and good, but the guy fitting you has to be good too. in my case, the new bike is spot on, even in places I didn't expect: I wanted a short stem (the thing that clamps your handlebars to your steering tube) and the guy told me that with the specific geometry of this particular bike, I'd actually need a longer one and said if I wasn't happy I could get a free replacement. I don't want the replacement because he was right.

fitting a bike to yourself can be a bit of trial and error until you get it right. I like how the BR article says that there are no magic formulas for fitting. In the end it really is how you feel. I'm a bit inspired to get a slightly longer stem for my mtb now lol :)

Lower back pain would seem to suggest a problem with your arm reach. An incorrect saddle will hurt your sit bones, incorrect saddle position will hurt your knees. If your bars are too far away from you, your lower back will constantly be trying to pull your torso upright. Move the bars closer to your torso and you can lean on them, removing the strain from your back.

Mind you, 38 miles on a mountain bike is heavy going. The most I've done on my mtb is about 48 miles but it's a lot more difficult than twice the distance on a road bike.

Perhaps a shorter handlebar stem might help, or you might check to see if the bars haven't sneakily rotated away from you over the coarse of a few weeks.

That, unsurprisingly, makes a lot of sense.

I'm quite long (6'2"+) with long legs, torso and arms. I do feel quite comfortable on my bike generally but it's something to be looked at.

This is also true. It was a mahoosive bike ride for me in terms of not having done much for quite a long time. It was the longest bike ride I'd done since last September - and I could tell. If I slowly build back up to that sort of distance my core strength will build back up - the muscles will gain their old quality.

Having said that I'll check my setup properly. Going to do a shorter ride tomorrow - either a more gentle 18-miler with a stop for breakfast or a slightly more demanding 30-miler with a stop mid-way for brunch - depending on what my mates are up for after todays imminent massive debauchery.

you might check to see if the bars haven't sneakily rotated away from you over the coarse of a few weeks.

I wasn't aware that could even happen. I'm such an old n00b ;)

Ta for the tips Tom. I was considering starting a thread screaming for you in the title :)

tbh I'd expect a large amount of aches and pains if I'd not done gone away in the woods for a while. still, nothing that would last over a day or two. I get a slight lower back ache and a more pronounced ache in my neck when I start hitting the mud, but that goes away after a few sessions.

Lower back pain is unusual while cycling, and indicative of a serious posture problem.

Scouse, get a recumbent :)

they're awesome btw. still, I dunno about which pain is unusual or not: tbh when I hit the woods, I'm amazed if there's a spot on me that doesn't hurt :)

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes m8.

Plus - I'm pretty sure you can't do a MTB recumbent. They're all for silly road users ;)

2 full weeks of Insanity done.

It's kicking my arse, but is very good. I'm averaging about a 550 calorie burn in a bit under 40 minutes each night. It's hard to even get up the stairs for a shower after the workout, but I'm not feeling too bad the next day. Like P90x it seems quite well designed to push you, but not too, far and throw rests/variations in at the right times.

I'm in one hole on my belt. Back to where I was at the end of p90x before a month off of terrible diet and lots of alcohol over Christmas. I've been really good with my nutrition for the first 2 weeks. I do a fit test tomorrow to compare with the test done on day 1. It'll be interesting to see the results.

Gumbo how much whey protein are you supposed to have after training in p90x? I read it somewhere now I can't find it.

Straight after the workout? You should be having a recovery drink. You can buy expensive ones, but just as good are some chocolate milks. You're looking for a 4:1 carb:protein ratio. I'm currently using little bottles of Yazoo which are 3andabit:1 ratio, through p90x I used Frijj which were a bit closer to the magic 4:1 ratio, but the yazoo were on special offer (fitness and sound economics!)

Whey protein is good to get an easy fix of protein at any time. The recovery drink idea is not so much for building muscles, but helping to repair the damage you just did to them so that your body is ready to go again the next day.

Generally nutrition wise you should work out your calorie requirements and then try and fill them with the right ratio of Carbs/Protein/Fats. You can use the myfitnesspal app to help track it.
