soooooo.... how many have come back to daoc from wow? give it time xD i know you all want it back...remember good old days...albs zerging hibs wiping them with 1fg, mids...errr...doing there stuff...
Those days are gone. :(

As for wow pve being boring, daoc wasn't exactly exciting, I recall wandering around lyonesse trying to get a tree group, it was exceedingly dull and when in a group it was exceedingly dull. I think some people have some odd backwards perspective that everything was super fun in the old days. :p

What Danya said, i have many good memories from daoc rvr and low level pve but i can't remember facing in another game anything as bad as corus mines' pit group (where you wiped every 5 minutes because someone new came in and you had to go rezz him because there was no real way to solo down there etc etc...) and fins4. The list was zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...And the artifact leveling...ouch...Some people actually liked that, but not me.

What i find better about the wow system is that even if it's based on the same idea (killing mobs to gain xp, it's not some kind of revolutionary skill based system) is that it motivates you to move fast from one camp to another, due to doing a different quest and the scenery never becomes repetitive. For people who like exploring and stuff it's great. Tbh, if you ever liked Morrowind, you are propably going to like WoW too, Morrowind's charm also mostly came from visiting new places in a huge world.

Where I agree with the vast majority of your post in regards to WoW encouraging people to move around, explore new areas and experience the full attractions of the world, I don't think this is quite right.

There are some zones which duplicate others and Teldrassil and Ashenvale spring to mind immediately. There is also a limited number of mob graphics which means you see the same mob just a higher version of it like the nightsabres, spiders, morlocs etc. This is similar to the early DAoC days when everything looked the same but just had a different name.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, just WoW is the same as any other MMPORPG, there are good and bad things about it.
It will develop over the years as all other games have. There wasn't a vast amount to do in EQLive when that came out either :)

Soon there won't be a "DaoC Vs WoW". At the rate Mythic are going, DAoC will become WoW!

Once Mythic have milked Blizzard, they'll turn to Guild Wars.
Late last year Mythic announced their instanced RvR expansion... though this was later put on hold. There probably weren't enough beta invites to go around Mythic's staff. So they're waiting for GW's release to see which ideas they can implement in DAoC, with minimal cost.

What're the bets the next retail expansion will feature iRvR arenas, along with the best features of Guild Wars? :p

Escape - EVERY MMORPG out there has stolen/borrowed etc from another game, even the grand-daddy of them all Ultima Online does it. WoW's mere existance is due to the success of games like DAOC, they'd not have even bothered with it if they hadn't seen how much money DAOC had racked in for Mythic.

So to make remarks about DAOC merging with WoW is a bit pathetic, Watch all the games and you'll realise just how much they pick out parts of each others games they like and incorporate them into thier own game. Guild wars is just as guilty of this as any other game.

after that it kinda started to go downhill :)

I agree. :) Leveling my first character was so great, and every mmorpg I've played since nothing can come close to being as fun.

Goblins sucked hard. Especially tanglers. I just used to run powersong and pick up loot, talk about tedium. :/

As for daoc borrowing from wow - of course. WoW borrows from everything else as well. There isn't much *new* in wow, it's just what they have is really well done. Blizzard aren't particularly revolutionary, they just tend to take something that works and polish it till it shines.

Well as for me:
i remember a smite cleric was my first char, at level 40+ it became harder to find groups since they only wanted heal specced clerics, at level 45 i had about enough of the anti-smite cleric crap and deleted it and started a fotm scout instead.
Took me ages to get it to 50 cuz i couldnt manage to play more then 30 mins each day due to the boringness of the pve (especially at these witherwood groups back then)

Best time ive had was with my minstrel in the fotm gankgroup, was fun for a while but unfortunately i fell back to the more action fps games i used to play.
BUT i have learned my lesson and will NEVER again play a random class in a new mmorpg, i will always check which is most fotm to not end up like a daoc smite cleric again...

The pressure WoW puts on Mythic is the best thing ever happened to DAoC - we are slowly getting all the little changes we requested years ago but didn't get them because of "as much as we agree these changes would be good you have to realize its impossible to do them because of our coding "<-read: we are too lazy to try you silly addict, just give as cash and be done with it ". Thanks to WoW Mythic removed the spam-filter from player feedback and actually started to listen players up to some degree :p Some of the fuckups (ToA :p) are probably too hard to undone but first time in year I see some future in DAoC

Strictly speaking, games don't copy each other. They belong to a genre and inherit the properties of that group. You wouldn't say Half Life is a copy of Doom. There's a bigger difference between DAoC and WoW.

But look at the inspiration Mythic has taken from WoW in the past 6 months.

DAoC now has ingame maps, you can even see your group on there! Quest NPCs are highlighted. Entering a zone brings up it's name. Lots more newbie quests which reward you with decent items! All of these small touches and more could've been added 4years ago. It's just a coincidence Mythic waited until now to add them?

Though developers will stick to proven formulas, some games distinguish themselves with unique features. DAoC had this with it's RvR system, that's what Mythic should concentrate on improving, instead of focusing on new players. But Mythic will wait to see what works in Guild Wars and sneak that into DAoC.

City of Heroes has ingame maps with your groupmembers marked on them...

Quest NPCs are highlighted (and marked on the map which we don't get in daoc)

Flimgoblin was referring to Escape's post I think (= he pointed out CoH had those things before WoW/DAoC) :p

Kinda pointless as there's a good chance people who actually moved to wow won't be lurking around this forum 2 months later...so not true results really.

Enterprising Minstrels acted as secondary CC, remezzing Goblins or stunning them off the Sorcerer/Theurgist--I had plenty of things to do as a Minstrel in a tangler group besides power song. ;)

Started to play DAOC just after the US servers opened and still playing it, tried WOW for one month but returned to DAOC. WOW isnt a bad game but far from finished. Overall, DAOC is superior against WOW.

Depended how good your sorc was. :p
Problem with minstrel at that stage was you were oop if you stunned much due to the crazy power costs (later halved thankfully). I used to burn mana when I had it, but really the diff between me using my instas and not was pretty minor - didn't mez much, the sorc would always overmez and screw it up. :/

I lasted a month in WoW before cancelling it. Only lasted that long as I needed something to play on my main PC while I was levelling my necro's tailoring via the other PC's wireless keyboard and a strategically placed mirror so I could see the other monitor behind me :)
