Whoever decided it was a good idea to not allow open beta registration until the open beta started needs to be moved into another role.

At this rate the servers will not get a stress test, and retail release will see the game servers fall. That of course depends on whether the account servers will be able to handle more than 50,000 people trying to create an account and register their retail key.

Feels more like an alpha test of their registration system, than an open beta of the game servers.

What You say is somewhat contradictively.

If you don't do the test in a testsituation as similar as possible to the release day,
the test results are truly worthless.
Honestly, what would upset You most, to wait over a day to get access
to the OB (that is free), or to be in same situation at the actual release date?

The only other way to do it is to have a complete mirrored system with
staff and all to run a simulation on. But who is going to pay for that?
And even then something not foreseen could happen. Ask NASA.

As for Alpha, yes I agree you could say that because this scenario hasn't been
tested before. So it is an Alpha test of registration to a Beta phase game.

On the bright side, what I've learned from my friends that actually managed
to get in earlier, the gameservers cope real well.
Even during the time all servers were down except a french localized, and
everyone logged into that one and crowded the newbie areas, there were no
serious lag problems, not even with all spell effects and so.

So chill out, we get there eventually, as we always do. We are MMO players after all,
and should be experts in stress handling and have thick
skin (if you are a clothie, else just put on some plate) to protect us from
disappontments and broken expectations.
We have been here before, and we always persits to come back for more!

Q: How long before the confirmation emails arrive?
A: This will depend but the current turn around seems to vary between 1 and 2 hours, it is possible that some people will be waiting for longer whilst others will get a reply sooner. If you haven't received an email yet, be sure to check your junkmail folders or spam filters.

Q: Is there a difference between the link posted today and the link posted in the news yesterday?
A: No, both are the same system.

Q: When I get the email can I log in immediately and play?
Sadly no, there is a delay before your account is activated. When you get the email you may not be able to patch immediately but as soon as you can patch, you can play, this is normally less than an hour.

Please don't post the same question over and over, there is no point repeating a question, I'll answer it when I can regardless of how many times it's asked, 6 pages of the same thing just makes it harder for me to find the new questions amongst the rest.

Still no mail here. Can't they reach the simple point that is taking too much for some people to get the mail, that something must be wrong?

<snip>

And that argument doesn't hold water.
It is very possible to get a realistic test without it being on the same day as open beta servers should go up.
In fact it is problematic doing it on the same day from software testing point of view. It is plainly poor planning or technical problems which did it, and frankly - I do not know which of the two to hope for, because neither conveys confidence in GOA.

And no - the Open Beta isn't free. Not for everybody - that argument also holds no water.

How many transactions will it be ... 100k ? 500k ?

And what kind of transactions, some db reads and updates ?

What kind of enterprise architecture have they there ?

It is running on a 486 on a 56k line ?

Sorry, after 36 hours, getting a bit tense ...

Maybe they are using the spin the bottle method to pick who gets a email or it could be like my second account email from yesterday which something like 15 hours cause i got it at 5:25 made that account at some random time between 10 am and 1pm i think much of yesterday is a blur the anger and fury took me :p

I think you misunderstand something - what's failing here is the GOA accounts system for the game, but because they left running that without testing until the same day as the Open Beta suppoedly went live, the effect is to drastically cripple the effectiveness of the Open Beta, since only a very small fraction of the intended testing base have been able to get onto the servers and play.

Had they taken a more realistic approach, they would have split the two 'tests', and had a week or two where problems in the account registration could have been uncovered and resolved, rather than what they have achieved, which is to upset those players who quite rightly thought they were going to take part in the Open Beta by failing to sort out their registration, whilst simultaneously weakening the quality of the testing that will get done in the OB.

I know this is a daft suggestion but we know no-one has the email yet.

Why not just wait until you receive it and that way we cut down on noise.

I'd just wish they put something on the bleep-ing site, so we know they're working on it. For all we know they don't know anything is going wrong?

I've just tried to enter my validation key, and got this funky little box with a spinning spiky wheel. That's it. Nothing to say thanks, your request has been submitted, just a permanent processing pic, I don't even know if their server got the details to check, let alone if it'll be successful.

Just refresh and put your details in again, it should go right through second time round (he says!)
