Can't believe I'd ever have felt sorry for Liverpool. This kind of ban does create some dangerous precedents though; will clubs be more reluctant to release players for international duty if it can result in this kind of harm? I know there's always the risk of injury etc. anyway, but this is kind of new ground.
They also just said that it has been confirmed that he will not be allowed to enter any kind of transfer negotiations during the banned period.
Not unless you are really stupid to commit such a disgusting offence three times on the pitch.
That's not really the point. FIFA have effectively created a new type of sanction that can't be appealed by the players' club, even though it affects them directly. Its this stupid twat biting someone now, but what if its something else in the future that's less...bitey? (I dunno, someone takes a swing at Sepp Blatter for instance). Having no right of appeal for the club that pays his wages seems a bit wrong.
I expect all sorts of legal wrangling now, you cannot penalise a club for the actions of a player when on international duty. Who pays his wages? Will fifa now compensate clubs for loss of the player and any sponsorship impact as they do with injured players? That's not really the point. Have they even confirmed it includes domestic games? Not had a chance to read much about it yet.
It not a new punishment, it been in the rules for a fair amount of time.... it however has not required to be used in this manner (Drug bans aside).
From what I can figure, it the nature of this assault (no chance of it being an accident), the reaction of Suaraz and his team (insisting it was nothing, he completely innocent and people are faking what has been seen), and his previous actions of the same nature (3rd time - in a lot of countries this would have a severe punishment if it was a 3rd criminal offense for instance you would get a massive sentance beyond the severity of what the 3rd offense was).
Liverpool would have known there was a risk of him commiting this type of offense again as all involved with him seem to have thought it a deep seated psychological issue. So one could say they gambled and lost on that front.
Yes, he's not allowed to do any football related activity (that includes off-pitch stuff like sponsorship events etc.) for four months.
Why not? The player deserves the punishment. It's not as if it's a one off infringement with a harsh penalty. Liverpool bought the player knowing he'd bit someone, they then stuck by the player after he bit someone again, now he's done it a third time and got what he deserved, they have to live with it because he's their player.you cannot penalise a club for the actions of a player when on international duty.
Uruguay say they will appeal, calling it an "excessive decision" for which "there was not enough evidence".
Uruguay Football Association president Wilmar Valdez added: "I have seen more aggressive incidents recently.
"It is a severe punishment. I don't know exactly which arguments they used but it is a tough punishment for Suarez."
Fifa said:The player Luis Suárez is to be suspended for nine (9) official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup™ fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on 28 June 2014. The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay’s next FIFA World Cup match(es), as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team’s subsequent official matches in accordance with art. 38 par. 2a) of the FDC.
Should try something other than long shots at every chance. Seems African players love a useless punt from 40 yards for some reason.Ghana desperately unlucky. Their goalie has had a blinder and then it's all undone by an unlucky own goal.
ah wasn't clear what it was about, he was rambling about being unhappy but they did not mention the situation with his brother. They just re-showed it and then David Platt mentioned the whole background. If it's true that they made him go to Abu Dhabi to train and do PR stunts and not let him travel to see his dying brother then they really were shitty.he's unhappy due to stuff about his brother who just died, cut him some slack
Not even allowed to sleep in the same hotel as the Uruguay team now, has had to go and find his own hotel and room. Uruguay management statement is bizarre, saying there is no justice in the world and that the evidence was weak and not conclusive. LOL!Wow. He's not even allowed to train with Liverpool. He's really fucked them over.
