I have windows 7 and using Windows media player but after its finished playing an avi file (not tried if it does the same with other file types yet) , it seems to keep hold of it when I close Win media player down.

I then have trouble deleting the file because its being "used" by media player.
I have to play another media file before I can delete the file.

Any way to fix this?

I have the same problem but with Windows Vista, haven't worked out how to fix it at the moment. The "google" views I've read seem to indicate a program or service keeping Media Player open, in my case it's either my keyboard which has a media player display function or the media center service.

//edit I think I read your post wrong. When you close WMP does is actually close? check taskmanager to see if it's just "hiding"

It windows media player version 12...that's what it says...

Yes the windows media player process still remains open even when I close it which is annoying...I wish it would close properly.

I do have a Logitech G15 keyboard which may be keeping the process alive. i didnt think about that! I'll try and disable that to see if it makes a difference...

Bloody thing won't disable :/

I think it must be that causing the process to remain alive and hold the file open preventing deleting!

Logitech having driving issues? Nooooo! ;) Fire off an email to logitechs moron support and see if you get any joy. If the same applies to Vista, suggest to them that is the OS you are running, otherwise you'll get the usual "we don't support something that isn't released, and when it is released, we will stop supporting your particular product" bollocks that Logitech and Creative enjoy spouting.
But yeah, uninstall the software if you can live without the keyboard shortcuts etc.

Found the problem with mine, it's to do with the slideshow application and the G15 keyboard.

The fix I have found is:

go to Control panel
--> click control panel home (not classic view)
--> In hardware and sound click "Windows Slideshow"
--> Untick all boxes for Windows media player.

There's an even easier fix, don't use Windows Media Player.

I found that I untick the media player option in the logitch services thing but media player is still being "used" by the G15 keyboard...

Even with a reboot it didn't make a difference...

However when I kill the logitech services and then restart then the Media player is no longer "used" and the problem is solved!!

:)

What media player would you recommend then?

Well it is! Win 7 media player is very smooth....
And the quality of playback of an avi on MPC was very poor compared to WMP...

While Windows Media Player has come leaps and bounds recently, the quality of playback should be identical considering they're using the same underlying engines to decode and display the video ...

Clunky? As in has minimal shite round the viewing window, starts up instantaneously and will run anything you throw at it (as long as you have the codecs).

Methinks user error.

One of those rare times we're in agreement John. If it happens again this year it could mean the end of the world :S.

You what?

Is this from the same school of thought that lead you to safely say a gfx card would not play a game you had not yet tried on it?

Dys, what the others have said, WMC loads faster, comes with less fluff and just works. It will also play more file types, you just need the codecs. Surprised there are still people who do not use a mpc / vlc combo.
