Yeah, it does look very nice for tablets and the next gen of touch screen laptops, but I can't help thinking that for your average workplace or home desktop it is a lot of unnecessary eye candy and doesn't look like it would be very practical with a mouse. Bit like running Android on a netbook, good idea in theory, really horrible experience in reality. I think if it is an option - 99% of desktop users would shut down or remove all the unnecessary tile stuff – which I am guessing will just leave you with a slightly tweaked windows 7.

It did just look like a UI app running over the top of Windows 7 tbh.

Windows 8 may just be an answer to Chrome OS. Windows 7 Starter still needs a chuck of horse power and looks crap in comparison. So a light weight speedy OS designed for netbooks and also optimised for touch devices could be a good idea if they get to market quickly.

That did not looks like an OS you would use in a corporate environment.

Historically though, MS aren't very good with light weight and speedy are they? They try to make windows the OS for all things and all people - as a result it tends to be very large, resource hungry and quite slow compared to a lot of the alternatives.

No that is true. And if this is just a Touch Screen UI rather than an OS. It does not look like they have changed, as if you need a 10gb Windows install to then just run this GUI it will still not appeal on a tablet with 32gb disk space.

This is just the UI; there's nothing announced about the underlying code, although I think MS are relying on Moore's Law to do its work for them as regards tablets (they've said publicly that windows phone 7 and its successors are for phones, not tablets, although that distinction is getting increasingly blurry).

Personally I think this is also a play by MS in the other direction; imagine this on a big telly with input via Kinect...

I think the UI is actually effectively web standards based and M$'s play is this:
  • Windows Phone OS + UI = Mobile Market
  • Windows 8 OS + UI = Home PC Market
  • Windows ??? OS (ARM Processor Rumours) + UI = Tablet Market
  • XBox + Kinect + UI = Home Media/Theatre Market
  • Windows 8 OS Vanilla = Office PC Market
If they get the UI open standards based it gives them the freedom to fuck about how they choose in between the hardware and the UI.

The fact is that MS need to get off their backsides and come up with a realistic alternative to android for tablets because because they are now dangerously close to being left behind in a market which is starting to really take off - personally I'm not convinced this is going to be it. Between Android and IOS they have hit the nail pretty much on the head in terms of intuitive touch UI's - sure there is room for improvement, but does that look like the next gen of touch UI?

Actually I think it looks rather good. I also like the phone version, but what would stop me getting a Winphone is the lack of apps. In the tablet space there's still everything to play for because MS are wisely (and kind of ironically) going for HTML5 and CSS3 all the way.

Developing apps for individual platforms is getting to be an expensive business for lots of people; Microsoft's way is the right way rather than the closed Jobsian route, and Google are as happy with their tabs using browser-based content as apps (so long as they flog advertising).

To be fair IOS app design is largely based on html5 and CSS 3 - remember the whole doom and gloom, ford you silly apple fanboi - without flash Apple are history thread. That descision hasn't exactly harmed the apps market for Apple has it?

Yet. Android is just gaining real traction now, for the first time it has siezed marketshare. There are a huge amount of tech savvy users out there who won't buy Apple because it doesn't do Flash, ontop of those you have all the Facebook gamers and there are 100's of millions of those, they might not be tech savvy but they want to be able to play the games thier friends on Facebook are playing but they can't. It is is a choice Apple are long going to regret. It won't break them or even anywhere close but it is going to cost them marketshare and we all know that is king, marketleader dictates the pace and the tech, Apple are about to lose that advantage.

Ipad 2 gets flash via wallaby on its next software revision - apparently it would have had it at launch, but adobe weren't ready with the release.

Yep but performance isn't guaranteed, neither is compatibility. Whilst it is a step in the right direction alot of apps are still going to need tweaking or rewritting. The marketshare drop won't be as drastic but it will still happen non the less, it should be available and working today but it just isn't because Apple is playing strategy.

Why would it, it was part of the reason to block it from a business pov.

It certainly looks very shiny but I need more meat than a UI to give much more comment.

Very nice UI. It will be interesting to see the rest of the features, the ones under the hood that are all important for the jobs a PC does, not just the way you interact with it.

Windows Metro Style Apps Developer Downloads

Developer preview is available. Surprised this hasn't really popped up anywhere before as it's starting to leak itself all over the net now. What do you guys think of "Metro" from what's on show so far?

Microsoft cry in their beds at night at how badly they want to be Apple.

I don't think there's a tech company that doesn't want to be Apple atm tbh.

I genuinely can't imagine myself applauding somebody sending a tweet. :\

I think the US Government would rather be Apple right now since Apple has more in the bank.

PS: Grey sweater, really? Could you re-enforce the Mac -v- PC stereotype any more?
