She's nice eye candy but thats all...have you seen Dame Judi Dench in Mrs Brown? - she's seriously talented . I still say Simon Callow needs to be in more films. He's awesome.

Me neither, although it's on the cards, after I read Stephen Fry's 'The Liar'. :D

Love it, but I think The Diamond Age is better.

Agreed. For me it's a toss up between that and Cryptonomicon as my favourite book by that author. However I've been bored senseless by everything he's done since the later.

book 3 of the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb

Very very good series but it must be the most melancholy fantasy story I've ever read. Such a bleak tone and no one gets the ending they exactly want or deserve.

So abit like real life then? :p

My biggest gripe with the Farseer books were that the story was very convoluted towards the end, especially with the 2nd trilogy. Still enjoyable reading, mostly because it's one of the few fantasy series that seems to get powerful women right, and doing it without making them action-heroes.

Just finished "The stories of Eva Luna" by Isabel Allende, "A Countrydoctors Notebook" by Mikhail Bulgakov, "Big Sur" by Jack Kerouac, "If not now, when?" by Primo Levi. Restarting "Solaris" by Stanislaw Lem as we speak! Thoroughly recommend all of em, especially Big Sur and Eva Luna.

Also recommend Natsume Soseki's "Kokoro" if you're even slightly interested in japanese writing

It is indeed a toss up. One the one side, Diamond Age is awesome, but Cryptonomicon is just pure win on an intellectual level, and one of the few books I've read that properly describes information warfare. Interface is a good shout too.

I'm currently reading Infanterie Greift An (Infrantry Attacks) by German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, it's a fascinating insight into World War One warfare.

What? Blasphemer! System Of The World and Anathem are both brilliant. I always look on The Diamond Age as his best Cyberpunk novel, and Cryptonomicon as his best "real world" novel (his early stuff like Zodiac and Interface fall into this category). From the blurb it looks like Reamde is going to fall into this latter category as well (it actually sounds a lot like Halting State in fact)

I think I'm due a re-read of Cryptonomicon quite soon. Thanks to Kindle I can read it without risking permanent spinal injury.

While I could appreciate all the writing skills and effort put into System Of The World I just didn't enjoy it and that's all that matters in the end.

Compare that to the A Galaxy Unknown series by Thomas DePrima, think a sci-fi version of Horatio Hornblower, which I finished in no time a few weeks ago (thanks Kindle). Especially early on it has terrible prose, paper-thin characterisation, incredibly basic plotting and clichés galore. Frankly I'm ashamed to even admit I've read it :) However despite all that it was an unabashedly fun & easy read! I literally could not stop myself wanting to read the next page.

yeah, tbh it's actually not doing well for my good feelings. I just feel so sad for all of the people. most of them are all trying to survive, and just get a world of shit thrown at them. I'd almost go as far as to say that Hobb hates characters even more than George RR Martin does, given the amount of horror that is unleashed 0o

lol it is indeed quite a book. I've stolen Will's. I'm actually not really sure if I've given it back. I've also stolen his American Gods and Neverwhere :D

I am about to embark upon Cryptonomicon based on what I have read here and a random conversation with a friend last night. It sounds fascinating tbh.

So I finished "Men at Arms" yesterday, going to take a Pratchett break and tackle Snowcrash and then Cryptonomicon.

tbh if you find Snowcrash a bit chewy, just read Gibson's Neuromancer. It's waaay shorter, has more sex and drugs, and both razor girls and ninjas!

Finally got back to reading Ghost Story myself, put it on hold for ages because I wanted to get a physical copy to use on the train but I foolishly decided to try a new internet book-shop to save £1 on shipping, and the fuckers took almost a month and a half to deliver the book.

Snowcrash was brilliant, did not want it to end. It did feel like a very abrupt cut off when it finished.

I'm going to attempt Cryptonomicon now.
