Granted there are ups and downs but the only point of banning legally held hand guns is to stop their owners from shooting people. Something that very very rarely happens anyway.

The crime rate after Dunblane could rise because illegal guns remained available, but the supply of guns (guns that could be nicked from gun owners basically) was effectively cut off, so you get a lag in crime rate after the ban but then the long-term trend is emphatically down (and NOT higher than it was pre-ban as you claim, certainly not per capita), and since Dunblane, the only multiple murder spree has come from a registered gun owner...

Fuck off, that's bullshit and you know it, because irrespective of an overall fall, the gun crime rate is still down proportionally more, and you only have to compare to other countries to see more guns=more deaths. Everywhere (yes, even "responsible" gun ownership countries like Canada and Switzerland).
