Oh come on - please take off the rose tinted glasses when you start wandering down memory lane.

I grew up in London and yes we played footie in the streets etc. but there was also minor arson, vandalism, glue sniffing etc.

Things like play schemes and youth clubs helped keep this down.

I went to a youth centre for about a year mate, yes we caused minor mayhem on the streets. Not criminal though, just pissing adults off.

Did you see the same level of criminality from the youth of ten years ago compared to today? Did they have higher levels of organised activity compared to today?

I'd put it all down to a catalyst powered chain reaction of youth brains that operate under the notion that everything is a good idea.

Biology in the 2010s.

Who lives at home at 31? really .... I haven't lived at home since 17 / 18 and I can't imagine being 31 living at home.

So on the point of feeling they have no future, let's compare the youth protests in Spain to what we saw here.

They are better organised now thanks to mobile phones and theres more gangs but little else has changed.

Yeah was about to say that usually in Finland you're kicked out of your home around the time you finish the army training(17-19), sometimes without asking you :p

I left at 15 i think, studying in another city.

But also, what was said above; these days youth are just as stupid as we were, they just get organized in a nanosecond and en masse.

Oh and the guy who ploughed into and killed 3 young blokes in Birmingham - do you think he thought they were looters?

I used to cycle loads, I also had a small evening job.

Personally what I also tend to think is irritating a lot of people is the feeling that some of the responses are almost pointing the blame back at those law abiding citizens who've had their property looted and buildings set on fire.

Bit too much of this going on here for my liking.

I can't believe people are seriously suggesting we should have the same shoot-to-kill policy as Haiti ffs. Is that what we've become? What's next, Judge Dredd? You people are really not thinking this shit through.

Yeah it is an incredibly short sighted approach. If the police started actively shooting then all these rioters would go from looting shops to all out war on the police and rest of society. They'd actually have what they'd see as a cause to fight for and real motivation.

Most Italian men, most Japanese men. Its more common than you think, for lots of reasons; demographics, male/female population imbalance, but mainly unaffordable housing. Very common in London.

Youth centres, lol. You didn't need youth centres or money when I was growing up, you made your own entertainment.

We used to scramble around derelict industrial buildings, throw stones into the river, build dodgy rope swings from crumbling bridges, that kind of thing.

Youth centres my arse.

The problem is that you get picked of the streets when you start doing that stuff nowadays. Although you have a point, you cannot compair youths from one generation to another. For example when you have no money for the newest computer or console, but your friends do, it starts to get pretty loney when they game 24/7. It's a dumb arguement when your 20+ but it all makes sense when you're 11 orso.

A Dutch saying: "When childeren play, they are sweet." comes to mind.

Apparently England has forgot to teach their kids that its not ok to burn down cars and buildings when they are in a bad mood.

Apparently the parents are too busy with their own lives to even have to slightest idea what their childeren are doing during the night.

Apparently the English society is incapable to do anything themselfs and rather waits for the police to arrive and do something about it.

There is no social control of any kind anymore. To go back to your time Tom. When you where doing something naughty there whas always somebody telling you that it wasnt ok what you where doing. Be it your parents, the neighbour, your friends or just somebody random. And you listened and 9 times out of 10 accepted it.
Also people knew eachother back then. You heared about someone problem and there whas always someone to help him out. Or you thought you got away with stealing the neighbours rozes , but the postman had seen it and told your dad.

The sort your own life or we take care of ourselfs attitude is a big part of the problem.

Yeah, it is common in London mainly because of the ridiculously high house prices and cost of renting means a lot of people can't afford to move out.

That is the biggest thing, back in the day, any fucker would clip me round the ear if I was being naughty. Harsh punishments at school to ensure discpline.

Nowadays noone does it because of PC and stupid fucking laws. Smack the kids if they are naughty.

Interesting, but what came first, the poverty or the cultural inability to get off your arse and get a job?

Oh yea because there are that many jobs out there. You thick old tit, get with the times before you spout shite.

Somewhat agree, I'd say I'm part of this generation and school was a breeze for punishments, used to get away with anarchy looking back at it, including looting the vending machines and canteen. Lack of a decent punishment means there is no fear of consequence at all, when your only going to get a slap on the wrist then you will do it. Simply put.

The problem that we didnt have as kids starting out was competition for those first jobs from the rest of the EU - most british jobs now go to non-british people.

I'm in the odd position with agreeing with both positions here. I'd be first in line to say people should get off their sofa from watching Jeremy Kyle and getting a job. My view has always been a lot of these people are lazy, scrounging-off-society uneducated bastards.

However Everz has a valid point. We advertised for a very mediocre paying, low ranking position in our company on Monday. In less than 24hours we had over 150 applicants! If that doesn't say something about the current economic climate I don't know what does.

By "non-british people" one presumes you mean "not lazy fuckers"?

Our unwillingness to learn other languages - coupled or probably made worse by the fact we start learning another one so late in school makes that hard though Gaffer. Compared to the EU countries, the majority of which can speak English or another language.

So we're back to our shitty education system. NB. I think the lack of languages thing is also a cop-out, think of the number of Poles you met who could barely speak a word when they came over.

Cuts both ways; the EU is also open to them. Blaming the EU is a crock of shit tbh.

Exactly. Frankly a lot of these jobs that those "damn foreigners" get I bet you'll find not a single UK people even applied because it's some how beneath them. And then they'll be the first to complain about immigrants stealing jobs.

The majority of people where I work are British. We're a British company. I suspect it's true all over the country. The majority of SHIT jobs that the estate scummers used to do, but now will not do due to lack of motivation, have gone to non-British people.

Sadly I have personal experience of companies bypassing the system and importing staff without even advertising the roles in the UK.
