Not really sure you can use Ireland as some sort of example considering the financial mess it is in.

No silver fox he isn't but his point is it isn't some sort of cake walk being on the dole....at least not for everyone any way.

Mabs' original point was that a cushy existence on the dole was part of the reason they are rioting. I don't buy the "cushy" argument in the slightest, because if that was the case the far cushier benefits claimants all over Europe would have burned the place down by now.

Nope, read it twice, still don't understand.

Okay.

Working on the assumption the majority of rioters/looters are from poor/under-privelaged backgrounds, in the long-term sense they are at the root of our society's problems. Unemployment, low incomes, high teenage pregnancy, crime, gang culture and so forth. These things are tied inextricably to their position in society for one reason and another. On the other hand, they are also relatively powerless to do anything about it as the 'power' is held in the hands of the rich side of society. Hence they feel disaffected, alienated and that they have nowhere to turn or any way to improve their situation.

Obviously this is an age old problem, but things like the rioting we are seeing right now is a manifestation of that frustration and disaffection. No matter if these people are 'scum' for their actions - and it's hard to argue against that, their actions are no doubt abhorent - it's also hard to ignore the fact that they are brought up their whole lives believing that's what they are and that's all they can ever be. All the power belongs to the minority, and sadly it is hard to see that ever changing.

Agreed, although overall in the past few years there have been quite a few riots in Europe.

no
not the reason they are rioting directly
the reason they have no respect
if you have nothing to lose, then why not riot ?
get fined ? how ? dont have any money ?
cant take away stuff they dont have

All for different reasons though; pure ethnic (France) to, "nasty EU are going to make us pay tax" (Greece).

Then I don't understand your point. Or rather I do, but it seems to be my point.

Dont forget the Spanish - the kids there were complaining about youth unemployment and less practical things like others having money.

I think theres a good paralel to Spain.

They all had the chance to learn in school. Libraries are free for anyone to use. They've all got access to computers, television, the lot.

In short, they've had more chances in life than anyone before them, and they've rejected it all, choosing instead to engage in petty crime and violence, and attacking anyone who they perceive to be "rich". They're thick fuckers, no wonder they can't get a job. Just listen to the two dozy girls interviewed by the BBC. Subhuman.

I have no sympathy for them. They made their bed, nobody else.

I heard firms in London are sending anyone who uses Liverpool Street home as that is meant to be a target for tonight. I see that having a very heavy Police presence if there is even a chance of it getting Looted (it stopped being protests or riots a few nights ago).

The BBC are still calling them "protesters". What planet are they on?

I'd be impressed if they do. There's a Met Police station directly across the road from Liverpool St.

CCTV is kinda useless if they cover their faces. They can only be identified by their clothes!

Unless of course they are caught, it's gotta be pretty hard to get ahold of 300 people running riot in a street!

I did giggle when I saw this on the Beeb:

Isna students news agency (in English), Iran

Iran called for London police to exercise self-restraint in dealing with protesters in Tottenham, north of London. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast referred to Saturday night's massive protests in Tottenham, which came following [the killing] of a young black man by Scotland Yard police and called for the UK government to avoid any police's harsh treatment with protesters. He stressed return of peace and calm to London through talks and examining demands of the demonstrators. Mehmanparast expressed hope independent human rights bodies would take measures to make clear facts behind murder of the black man soon.

Regardless, if you carry a gun, you deserve to get shot.

I still don't think we need the army. The police can handle this Ms May just needs to take the leash off. Let the police steam in to one lot of these chavs and show them some brutality and the rest will soon go home. But a lot of coppers are holding back out there after the G8 cop getting left out in the cold. Ms May please let the police sort this out without fear of their jobs and freedom.

Theresa May. She was talking this morning that they can still make police cuts without any impact on front-line services! She's also refused to consider appointing Bill Bratton, the US supercop, as Met Police Commissioner. She insists the Met Police chief should be British. Why? Surely the best man for the job should be appointed regardless of his or her accent or nationality? Who cares if he's American if the streets are safer? What planet is she on?

US supercop criticises decision to stop foreigners applying for top Met job - Telegraph
