That always baffled me, what if a company. Say Renault, made a regular shitty sedan. But put something like an Audi R8/Lambo body on it. And sold it as a little bit more expensive Renault. Wouldn't it sell better than a regular Renault but still being cheap to produce? Or why do cheap cars have to be ugly?

They don't. There are lots of great looking "cheap" cars, and quite a few shit looking expensive ones. And Renault couldn't stick an R8 body on their own chassis because car shapes are copyrighted, which is why the likes of BMW get so upset about monstrosities like this:
