Well probably not. The only reason this happened was an independent agency was actually trying to promote diesel in the US by showing how good VW's diesels were. Other manufacturer's use the Urea injection system and VW didn't, which was supposedly testament to their clever engineering. It was clever alright, just clever software engineering.

Just because someone is a good accountant or finance officer doesn't mean they are IT or Internet literate. I've met a few excellent ones that can talk for hours on tax laws, VAT, HMRC etc but barely know which way up to hold a mouse.

Must admit I agree with this, the horrendously myopic focus on CO2 has left our roads full of horrible soot chuckers and pretty bad air quality in our towns and cities (although ironically enough some of the worst air quality is where they've tried to make passenger cars as unwelcome as possible - Oxford, Princes Street in Edinburgh, etc. The worst offenders for NOx and PM emissions are actually big diesel engines at idle or moving off - i.e lorries and buses. Most of the (non VAG) Euro 6 diesel car engines are actually fairly clean burning - not that I'd have one, as all the crap they have to fit to them to burn cleanly is a disaster waiting to happen when they run out of warranty, but still cars are far from the worst offenders.

It's also made our roads sound fucking awful, with that horrible clatter of diesels everywhere At least when you go to the US that's (still) replaced with lovely V8 noise.

US Protectionism doesn't half make me laugh though. Whilst I appreciate VW were a bit sneaky, however no one died and they could get an $18 billion fine - where as GM's faulty iginition switches killed 124 people, and they get away with $900 million. We'll also ignore the EPA's recent release of 3 million gallons of polluted water into a river in Colorado through poor safety practices and incompetence (an EPA specialty apparently) - looks like no fines at all for that one.

Whilst I agree this is fairly shocking, to call it an AIDS drug is a little bit misleading - it's for toxoplasmosis. It's a bit like referring Ibuprofen or Penicillin as an AIDS drug - they are used to treat the symptoms of illnesses in patients, some of whom have AIDS. This story can stand on it's own without the emotive misreporting going on around it.

Main thing is he will be a marked man now - both the FDA and the FBI will be monitoring him very closely - especially if, as rumoured, he makes the drug itself harder to obtain. Although the drug in question is 63 years old now, so well out of patent - in theory it shouldn't be too difficult for another company to manufacture it at some point - this will probably take 6 - 9 months though.

I don't have a massive issue with Pharma companies trying to claw back some of the risk and development of these drugs (which evil capitalism has facilitated the creation of in the first place) - sociopaths like this one though should be taken to task, as he has very few of these risks to worry about.

However the focus on VW will mostly be due to the fact there are a lot more people out there with VW's than with toxoplasmosis.

Whats that got todo with refrubs. And it seems like its a cou try wide only so many are allowed to study medicine. Donno why cant see the point myself maybe its an expensive course or they dont see the need for that many doctors or something.

Dude. You wanna see these Chinese families that come to our unis to check it out. They're loaded. I knew a bloke who worked for UPP ( a firm that deals with student accommodation )

He was telling me in these brand new halls which were £5k a year near my first year halls, these families would rock up in Ferraris, Aston Martins etc, and they didn't even live in the UK.

There was a family looking at my uni, I shit you not. They had aides following them around.

End of the day, UK degrees are still seen as worth more than many other degrees in different countries
