Actually the issue with the train not going through any city centres is worse...HS train then wait for a connection?
I don't get the whole idea, yes the train is faster, but you have to wait for the frickin thing to turn up, which kjnda dictates your whole day anyway, so 30mins saved is irrelevant...it would be far better to put loads more ordinary speed trains on.

You're looking at it the wrong way around. When you arrive at Euston most people will need to make a connection of some sort anyway, probably the Tube; so its not that big a deal to be dropped at a different part of the Underground. The only big negative is access to St. Pancras and the Eurostar, but I assume Old Oak Common/Acton are going to be the West London version of Stratford; an interchange to give fast access to town. If they do it right, it makes more sense than Euston tbh.

Anyway...who the fuck needs to get to Birmingham 30 mins quicker that they have to spend 10 billion on a train.
You could build a ten lane M99 ring road around England for that.

I agree that you're looking at it the wrong way. It could mean you can get away from Birmingham 30 minutes quicker and everyone wants that.

Fucking shit hole.

Java Script error basically, make sure your local version is up to date and try again. If you still get it, it is their end.

criminal charges likely
Maybe I'm a cynic but I doubt it.

I'd put the whole board up for prison time. And I mean long prison time - 20 years+. And I'd also put the technicians who implemented it up for lesser offences.

NOx kills more people than terrorism.

They are the biggest car manufacturer in the world so will likely be a temporary blip

21 billion euro would be approximately 1 years profit according to wiki except they can probably do some accounting jiggery-pokery and deduct it from taxes somehow

Criminal charges against board members or executive would be more effective in preventing this kind of crap

Or ban all cars that have the system implemented leading to huge recall and market share loss

Yep. No doubt. So "the people" miss out on a tax take from a company that's acted woefully criminally.

That's almost certainly going to happen. A recall on its own may not be possible though; might have to be a buyback, because I don't think they're going to be able to do any kind of fix (other car companies use a Urea injection to keep NOx down, as do VW as of this year, but I don't think you could easily retrofit).

The knock-on effects are the thing that will keep the share price down though; this is VW's "unintended acceleration" moment of the millennium, and when that happened to Audi it knocked them on the arse in the US for a decade.

Is this US only though? Surely the design doesn't change all that much from country to country.

I can see a lot of fleets having trouble with tax if the emissions are much higher than expected.

Yes it's just the US. The reason is US has much stricter NOx rules than CO2 -obsessed Europe, although that will change soon. That's why diesel hasn't really been a thing in the US and they've embraced hybrids more (Japan is the same). VW's diesel cars aren't a massive part of their US business (although more than other makers) but they were trying to encourage diesel sales and made a big marketing play for how clean they were.
