I have a coal fire, but i can never be arsed to build one Plus lighting one is an effort since with my luck the sticks never take and i have to spend 15 minutes holding newspaper over the chimbney opening(creates an up draft) in order to get it to take properly

I can proberbly build one a damn site better than you can. It's smokeless fuel that's the problem, though - It takes a hell of a lot of heat to get it to take. Infact, we've got a whole load of logs this year, so a good stratedgy would be to light the fires with the logs, and then stick the smokeless fuel on once it's roaring.

Of course once it's dark we just use normal coal, since you can't really see the smoke, but i'm not pratting around with a fire if i'm only going to enjoy it for 4hours or so, before going to bed.
