I guess the trick is to do as much of the story as possible at the lowest BR possible and recruit everyone you can as soon as you can?
Yeah its a real shame mixed groups become useless. You cannot utilise the arts of all of them in one move.
the only thing that can mess you up is enemies that can cast curse.
Curse is easy to deal with, send in 1 union and put the rest on standby, they will only curse you the first round so if you send a "dummy" union in it will deadlock the mob and force it to curse that union.
BTW that healer (sister of Rush forgot her name) is immune to curse.

any tips for the gates of hell?
I have tried about 20 times now, different combinations of unions (from 5 small unions to 4 to 3 big ones), different formations, different strategies when dealing with the minions. My problem is he always takes out one of my unions with an unexpected attack, or I do not get the option to heal when I know they will need it. As soon as one union is lost and enthralled it is pointless continuing. BR 46 by the way.
Basically if a union dies then the baddie revives them, but under his control, no option to rejuvenate them before he gets to them, or clear the curse.
if you aren't stat boosted (which you probably aren't if its your first run through) then he will wipe most unions so fast that unless you got loads of "attack from range" groups you will end up dead really fast.
