Just a matter of time before someone finds a hole that lets you flash a 3.50 or later with an older firmware. Still early days, being able to run service mode is a massive step in the right direction.

Is there anything good to do with the jailbreak that doesn't involve stealing games?

Emulators are in the works, a few early alphas already running. Running .mkv's is also being looked at, would imagine a decent media centre program will be out before too long.

XBMC for the PS3? Yes please :D

Wonder if it would be able to do multi region DVD's also, suppose that may be locked in the firmware of the player though, hrm.

Aren't most Sony dvd players region locked through hardware rather than software?

Think so sadly, they're notoriously annoying to make region free :(

Although wasn't there some mention of the DVD region being free in earlier revisions of the PS3 firmware?

not dvd region free but say if you ripped a r1 dvd and burned it as a region 0 dvd then the ps3 will play it, it still does.

dedicated xbmc wont happen at least not by xbmc devs but if they can unlock the other processors and the mem make full use of it in linux then there will be nothing stopping peeps running the tux build of xbmc with ubuntu etc

still that will be a long way tho

The SPE's were locked under linux, in hacked debug mode though everything is available, you just need to know to code for it and hook into the existing system libraries. We already have boot managers coded and running so the first footsteps have been taken, now the kernel has been dumped and people are looking through it you can expect some interesting developments in the next 3 months. I would expect basic .mkv playback before too long and as I said before the emulation scene is already heavily involved.

Really? I thought only the CPU was available to linux, the gpu and spe were off limits. Can't say I am sure though so I will look into that. Luckily having access to the kernel and service mode should give full access to all hardware as the hypervisor is bypassed which is something Otheros couldn't do.

One SPU/SPE was locked, 6 were available for anyone who wanted to fuck around with Cell programming.

Ahh thats nice, see that is another good about this hack, young programmers can get thier hands on advanced console tech without having to work at a big studio or pay for a development kit.

Re the original purpose of this thread, in terms of units sold the PS3 is pretty close to the 360. I refuse to cite references due to the usual retort of "ZOMG FUCKING BEE-ESS NOONEZ USEZ THOSE FIGUREZ", but I wonder what impact Playstation Move will have on that remaining gap given that it sold over 300k units in a few weeks?

Edit: Actually I will cite a reference "As of the end of June, Microsoft had shipped 41.7 million consoles globally and Sony had shipped 38.1 million PS3s."

Could PS3 sales take over 360 sales soon?

That's not a reference though is it. I mean if it is then so is this:

"Everyone on earth owes MYstIC G the sum of £500.00 payable in full on 02 October 2010"

:p

Actually, shipped means shipped into retail channels and not actual SOLD units. Oh and would you expect credible Microsoft results from a Sony guy? :D

Sold units is actually 38 million PS3 and 43 million Xbox 360 as of last months figures. Of course you can doubt those as well, it doesn't really matter. The big problem for Sony is the U.S. where it is often outsold 2:1 by Xbox 360 based on the NPD numbers. Sony have lost gubloads of marketshare in the states and have made almost zero inroads into Microsofts lead there, in Europe they have been strong but generation on generation they have less than a third of marketshare they had last time around. Microsoft have already sold 20 million more units this generation than last, by end of life that will be 40 million units more. This generation was a big win for Microsoft any way you look at it, they more than doubled their marketshare.

By the second half of next year, I reckon so. PS3 has some strong stuff coming up, and Move being much better and economic than Kinect means it's potential position is very strong. I expect a LOT will be sold over Christmas, especially now GT5 is finall nearly here. Pre-ordered my Collector's Edition :D

PS3 is doing well no doubt, NPD numbers for 360 are looking like the strongest run up to Christmas so far for the console. As well as PS3 and Move will do they need to make some serious noises in the U.S. if they are going to eat much further into 360's lead there and it is still the biggest country for sales. 360 has sold 25 million units there already, 10 million more than PS3 and that gap has not been getting any smaller with the 360 still winning in sales totals month after month.

GT5 is going to be really interesting, in many ways it could turn the tide more than Move for Sony this Christmas as it is the last big title to show it's face this generation and is the most anticipated game I have seen in many a year. If they market the nuts off that then you might be right by next summer Wazz, we live in interesting times.

My original point I made way back in this thread stands though, Sony have lost a ton of marketshare this generation and that has to hurt after the massive investment they made in developing the PS3 tech.

... and as I said, the PS3 has done what it was meant to do: win a format war. That alone makes the PS3 a success.

It's also got a longer lifespan than the 360, which will justify the extra costs in investment. We've seen the full power of the 360, we've not seen games yet that fully utilise the ps3.

Very much looking forward to 3D games that also utilise Move.
