The point of what? I don't play online on my PS3

You're in the minority if you don't play online and aren't interested in any games that are sold on PSN. The PSP is really different because most games aren't multiplayer, the multiplayer games are generally ad-hoc only, and there isn't much to buy from PSN.

you wont be able to play online until you do ;)
which is surely the point?

It is the same situation on the 360

The ps3 isn't exactly 'wide open' yet as a child could work out what consoles are altered (the paths for the games are easily detectable as being incorrect) so the xbox style ban waves will start arriving

I really dont see what the fuss is about

You have missed the point fella, installing and running code from the hard drive is a feature of all the debug kits that are with developers. Stopping code executing from those paths would pose massive headaches for the developers, remember that this 'hack' is effectively switching the console into debug mode and bypassing all hypervisor checks. That enables them to access everything, the kernel has already been downloaded and ripped open, more holes will be found and new hacks will arise.

The genie is out of the bottle, they might be able to block the majority having access for a while but eventually the system will be wide open and every firmware update will be eventually circumvented in some way shape or form.

Again, it's besides the point. There is a market for pirate games, you can't play many pirated PC games online yet there is a massive scene for pirate PC games.

Out of interest. Which PSN exclusive games would convince someone who pirates games to not hack their PS3 and get all other games for free? Oh, and what makes you think the PSN exclusives would not be available "from the usual sources" within hours/days of being released? I am also yet to find a PS3 game where the online experience is better than the PC. Gran Turismo being a future exception.

There is some pretty amazing stuff on PSN. Super Stardust HD, Pixeljunk Monsters/Eden/Shooter to name a few. Also, PSN is a vital component of some of the best games out like Demon's Souls and LittleBigPlanet.

Last year Sony said that there were 25 million PSN accounts. I don't think there were 25 million PS3's sold at the time :)

I have 3 different accounts, those numbers don't really say alot.

One household can have multiple accounts for a single console? Before I bought my xbox I had a live account to use with me flatmates console, same with him and the ps3.

You'd think that since I said there were more PSN accounts than consoles, that I'd already grasped the fact that people had more than one account. But no, go on, please tell me a few more times and I may finally understand.

If you only wrote about things that you understood, it would be a lot quieter around here :p

Having a PSN account doesn't mean people play online though does it. I've got about 2 or 3 xbox live accounts (because I won't pay for a username change) but I never play online. Because online play on consoles is full of the AIDS.

Bad AIDS at that.

Playing online isn't the only reason to have an account as I already said -_- if someone had zero intention of ever going online with their console, why would they have a PSN account?

Don't you have to have one to play on it? To get to the "play disk" bit don't you have to sign in? Like steam you can play in offline mode though if there is no connection, it just logs you into the console using your PSN credentials.

I may be wrong, its been a long time and I always just sign in anyway.

Anyway, its still besides the point. Pirates don't necessarily care about online functions, as in the PC, there are bucket loads of games available as pirate copies, people wouldn't bother ripping/hacking them if nobody wanted them.

Don't you need a PSN account to get demos? That's why I have an xbox live silver account...

Yes, you do. This supports what I'm saying, most people do want to use PSN, even for small things like that. That is what you'll lose if you can't go online because your firmware is out of date.

My original question about figures was in relation to this point:

You're in the minority if you don't play online and aren't interested in any games that are sold on PSN.

Someone has mentioned that chances are PSN games can be hacked and pirated too and that leaves playing online. Number of PSN accounts doesn't tell us how many people are interested in playing online.

No, people who care about that stuff will lose out. There will still be plenty of people who would rather just have the full game for free than a demo or some popcap style game.

Putting the ethics of game piracy aside. What would you rather have, a full free game or a demo of a game? If you are someone who sees nothing wrong with games piracy then the choice would be obvious. Personally I don't bother with demos and don't pirate games so I guess I am in the middle somewhat, I don't use PSN but have no intention of messing with my PS3.

They would need to improve PSN a hell of a lot to deter pirates, it seems to me that its just fluff in its current form, I think the only time I have used it in the last 3 years was to buy final fantasy 7 and 8 on my PsP.

Hold on, you don't have to create a PSN Id to use the Ps3.

People create accounts because they can, I'd be interested to see the usage statistics for each account if Sony have ever released them.

Raven is very correct here, there are lots of people who simply do not care about online gaming, or do their online gaming elsewhere.

I think you all underestimate just how willing people are to forgo features for a free ticket.

ahh i see
I didn't realize it let you get full dev mode, it is a bit of a sad day tbh that means the hacks will soon be incoming for various games

The lack of hacks on PSN was one of the main attractions for me regarding online play opposed to the xbox :(

I am not sure it will have that much of an impact on legit people, I imagine Sony will be able to detect it and take action.

I wouldn't worry about that, the hypervisor would need to be up to access PSN so you couldn't run it in debug mode whilst online. That should rule out any game hacks making it online hopefully.

Lots of info about the whole thing here...

PSX-Scene

It really does seem to be going mainstream, over a dozen clones out already.

hehe that's what I was implying :p
But it could be argued legit movies are rarely big enough to warrant it :p

Looks pretty decent, but coming from a pretty neutral standpoint I don't think it looks incredible. I'd quite like to give it a bash and see how it plays at some point though.
