Eh? What does recent pricing have to do with it? Microsoft slashed prices for the holiday season and Sony didn't, when the sales results come out in January we shall see which was the smarter move.

sony them shelves know about that, they slashed ps1 prices when n64 came out, same with ps2 when gc and xbox came out. it helped them sell more the fact they are not doing it now is some what odd. preety much shows the peeps who have taken over from previous bosses in the game divisons are some what thick

You're assuming that just having people buy the console makes the decision a success? What if Sony drop prices to £5.00 per console? They'll sell out but it'll be an awful business move.

Sony are aiming to achieve profitability, while Microsoft are just aiming to get as much Microsoft stuff in peoples homes.

well since the saturn/ps1 days maybe even before then they have all made loss on hardware but made up the profit through software.

Hardware is traditionally sold at a loss, pretty much every console in history until PS3 has operated that way following the loss leader model. I am assuming nothing, I am just using my knowledge of how things work both now and in the past to come to my conclusions. The entire industry is screaming at Sony to slash the prices and take the initial hit to really help PS3 get momentum, right now it is just chugging along and it is going to be #3 again in sales this Christmas (third holiday season in a row I might add). That is not gaining traction, that is losing ground plain and simple.

Exactly, I cannot think of another console that wasn't sold at a loss until well after 2 years on the market. PS2 hardware didn't break even until well into year 4 as I recall and even then Sony kept slashing the prices which helped make the PS2 a monster smash hit, all those consoles sold hundreds of millions of peices of software of which Sony took a nice little licence fee on every single game sold.

On a more positive note you can now buy games like Mirrors Edge, LBP, Motorstorm 2 and Resistance 2 for £20, all very recent releases and if those prices are a reaction to games not selling so good on PS3 I say long may it continue :)

I never said they were trying to make a profit on the hardware itself, but well done jumping on a point I never made :)

You have to manage your losses. You can't afford to practically give the things away and expect to make money - which is the point I'm making about Microsoft. It doesn't matter to them if they lose a lot of money, because they aren't trying to profit directly from the console market. Sony will only drop prices when they can afford to.

i'll rephrase that, from what you are saying it sounds like Sony only have the PS3 and nothing else, they dont have anthing else, like TVs DVDs and every other piece of electrical equipment

What the fuck. How do you get from what I said to that?!?!?!

I'm saying they want their computer entertainment division to be profitable. Has nothing to do with whether or not they sell TVs or walkmans or whatever.

SCEA != SCEE != Sony Electronics

All part of Sony Corporation but separate trading entities. The only thing they probably have going for each other is an arms length agreement.

Well I am going for a phone contract with a "free" PS3. Not for games as the exclusives (with the exception of final fantasy) don't interest me and I have a PC so I would rather use that. Better graphics, better controls etc.

With the phones they tend to offer on those deals as well as the price and length of contract, the PS3 isn't quite 'free' :(

A lot of people will standby Sony no matter what. They have an image of quality and performance products. Which, used to be true but they changed over the last ten years and people have not noticed yet. Their quality is now poor compared to other main competitors. Added to that it really irks me when I hear people say that Sony make the best LCD's. Fuck do they! They do not even make LCD Panels, thank Panasonic, Fujitsu and Samsung for Sony's wonderful Bravia range. Panasonic's biggest customer worldwide is Sony!

On topic I think they largely failed with the PS3 due to the delay and pricing. MS realised costs was a big issue and were prepared to take a hit in order to make a market. The Wii won over both because it appealed to a larger market than just gamers. It has made gaming a family fun activity.

Judging by my experience of Panasonic goods I'm guessing Panny ship them to Sony then Sony put them together properly. I don't have 1 bit of Panasonic equipment that still works as it should - hence me stopping buying them. I'll stick to Samsung and Sony thanks.

Anyway on topic I don't think PS3 has failed at all. It's got an excellent installed user base and it still has plenty of years life left in it. Let's judge PS3 when PS4 is out shall we?

I think Sony were taking a large hit on price but there was much more in the PS3 so even with a big discount was still too expensive for most people. Maybe a unit without Hard Disk and Blu Ray would have helped but that could have hurt Sony in the HD format war.

I agree about people buy Sony for the name I used to be the same with my TV's went for a Samsung with the latest TV and it had better on paper specs for £200 less.

Guys the quality of a TV isn't just about who makes the panel. Sony's LCD soft(firm?)ware is what makes Bravia an amazing LCD. Samsung make the panels, sure, but Samsungs all have lots of lag due to their image processing software. Hence the need for a GAME mode that doesn't do much extra processing.

Well frankly, if you can't afford a decent console you deserve to get lumbered with an X360. Funny how when talking about sales they never mention the 360's abysmal failure rate (only Bill would think 1 in 3 failing is acceptable). I only know of 1 person out of about 6 who are on their first X360. The rest are on 4+.

Anyway you Xbox lamers might have time to start flame wars and stuff, but some of us have Resistance 2 to finish so we can get onto LBP.

I flogged by 360 for a Wii over a year ago, had worked flawlessly since I had it, broke 2 months after I sold it (it would have been about 16months old.)

Oddly the only console I've ever bought that developed a fault in the first year is the Wii, 2 weeks after buying it the DVD drive refused to read anything. According to the shop it was the only one that had ever been returned.

I'd love to get a PS3, but the costs and fact that I'd probably want a HD TV to go with it put me off, not really any point in having HD with a Wii :D

I wouldn't say Nintendo have won the console wars for this generation - I personally think Microsoft will as Wii owners don't buy that many games. I have about 20, but most people I know have 3-4.

i quite like getting new ones and having my warranty renewed

Every single PS2 i had broke bang on a month after warranty ran out and so did everyone elses i know. People all seemed to have forgotten about that.

At least MS replace the xbox completely free, with a 3 year free warranty too

EDIT: i've had a 360 since day of release and its only been replaced once. Little tip i have is have the xbox lying down, put 2 DVD cases underneath it to raise it up, means all the vents can get air ;)

I don't have an XBox. Just a PS3.

My PS2 broke down. My PS3 makes a total racket. All kinda missing the point though, which is that PS3 is shedding cash for Sony and they'd be mad to try a PS4.

(and LBP is toss:()

It's strange how some people have really loud PS3's, I have a 60gb one and only the other day realised I had gone and left it on all night after watching a blu-ray it's that quiet.

It depends on how hot it gets.

My sister's PS3 sits in a cabinet and sounds like a Dyson injected with amphetamine, however my PS3 is whisper quiet.
