Hmmm, looking at worldwide hardware sales, the PS3 isn't doing too badly at all. It just hasn't had the jumps in popularity the PS2 had. However I'm sure over the next 12 months with all the exclusives like Killzone 2, GoW 3, GT5 (hopefully) and a strategic price cut it'll soon exclipse the 360.

And interestingly if that chart is acurate in terms of average sales per week from launch the ps3 actually beats the 360 worldwide. So it's all just a big pile of nothing in here isn't it.

Yep, alot of people said exactly the same last this year and yet the PS3 is no closer to the 360 than it was on the day it launched. The 360 has traction now, 27 million installed users and a great software library, all at a price people can afford to pay during an economic downturn. The gap isn't going to get smaller this Christmas but bigger according to informed opinion in all the trade papers.

Agreed, those numbers are a few million out and don't really track with the NPD data either which are the numbers that the retail sales industry plans around.

- Gran Turismo for the PSP had come out (really, really, really fucked me off that it never did, was so annoyed at Sony for that)
- The PSP was an integrated peripheral, and was useful - even as a spare controller or something.
- I could record my telly on it.
- My friends hadn't all got XBox 360s, thus allowing us to play online together.

It didn't, so I went for the cheaper XBox 360.

As for any of the others, non of the games interest me in the slightest fashion graphics are a great thing to have but game play and interesting story are what I look for. Sadly non of the consoles are coming out with any games to the standard that I used to get hooked on.

I'm a fucking huge Gran Turismo fan (seriously, I just spent the best part of £400 quid on a seat and G25 for it) and yet I can't imagine anything worse than playing Gran Turismo on a PSP. Absolutely no analogue input for acceleration and braking? Having to use the nub for steering in a sim racer? Heh. No thanks :|

its still being worked. apprently. still that was the reason why i got the psp tho the homebrew stuff has more than made up for it

Oooo is it worth the money? Been so tempted myself, but I wouldn't want to shell out the cash for it to feel nothing like a car. What's the force feedback like? Wish I could try it out somewhere before parting with a wodge of cash.

It's not like driving a car at all because you only feel through your hands/arms and not your body. You still feel a bit disconnected, but it's much much better than using analogue sticks. Also, I find manual shifting on a pad near impossible but using sequential paddles is a dream.

The force feedback is good. Took some getting used to though, especially when you get a little out of shape and it starts throwing the wheel in the wrong direction. If you don't hold on tight it'll steer you rather than the other way around

And... worth the money? Not sure yet - I imagine it will be when GT5 hits. I neglected to mention that I shared the cost with my brother, so it wasn't too bad. It's still a lot of money. Chair is fucking comfortable though (Playseat Evolution).

PS3 sales down 19% on this time last year according to NPD, isn't going to be the bumper Christmas many predicted.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

1. It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.
2. The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".
3. The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."

There's really only one option left for Sony to remain in the game: deep price cuts, and not just for people with good credit. Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.

Have to say I disagree with the second point they made about people not seeing the quality difference on TV's smaller than 50inch. It is pretty noticeable on a 37inch at 1080p and more so at 42inch. Above that there is a big big difference when using the right material that has been well filmed and then encoded to the highest quality standards. All that said though they are pretty much right with everything else, PS3 will be lucky to reach half the PS2's total sales in it's lifespan. The market is too diluted now, MS are eating away the hardcore gamers slowly and Ninty have stolen all the kiddie console gamers.
