The failing here is classic..every generation thinks nothing bad can happen because 2018..or..1939..or 1915..or 1065.

Young people have only known peace..but the UKs relationship with the continent is tenuous at best...we only get on with the Dutch and the Scandanavians , they figure very little in our news..in fact outside of holiday programs, euronews is entirely..wtf are they up to now, even from remainers.
We have four germans we like..ill ignore the royals...that chick off top gear..boris becker, the F1 driver in a coma and that comedien with a funny face.
The rest of them are kept at a good distance.
I'm not sure I've ever met a German I disliked to be honest.

Maybe I just don't meet enough of them.

Funny that, what with the purpose of the EU being to bring lasting peace...

As for the rest of your bullshit - I get on well with Germans. I find them erudite, kind and fun. Worked with many of them for years. They generally like us too.

In fact, most people with a couple of brain cells to rub together get on just fine, regardless of where they are in europe, or indeed the world.

It's the ten percent of intractable wankers like yourself that will never get on with anyone. If it was left to people like you then Liverpool and Manchester would go back to no-go zones for each other's inhabitants again.

As usual you relate from a personal viewpoint and ignore the wider truths.
Continentals rarely figure in our culture, unlike theirs, they share popular culture in their tv shows in ways we just dont.
Im not saying we dont like individual germans..I mean seriously..
As a country we ignore them.
And tbh they can share a lot wuth thanks to a gift from us...the English language...connecting the world since the 1700s

Actually, you just described yourself (and based it all on what you see on TV, by the looks of it).

Ah yes. A country in Europe discussing closer relationship with Europe's main trading bloc. What sensible neighbour wouldn't invade based on that disgraceful provocation?

They should know. They are only allowed the freedom that Moscow deigns to allow them.

I'd suggest their overtures to Kiev could be filed under "poking the angry bear", however their record isn't great is it? Two attempts to get involved in International Diplomacy, two conflicts caused. GG Brussels - I can guarantee the Baltic states are looking at this proposed EU Army and positively shitting themselves.

Ok then , maybe you could direct me to the great sharing of cultures between britain and the continent.
All those german/french/polish..etc celebrities and scientists/politicians we see from the continent on our tv and in the media.
We certainly see an endless stream of Americans, theyre on tv every week.
We have one Italian ,Gino de campio...and hes like an italian parody.

You really don't get anywhere apart from your front room do you? Culture <> TV.

We share each others cultures by working alongside, living with, visiting each other and our countries.

My peer group does it all the time - as do a lot of the freddies - taking advantage of freedom of movement. And we love it, because it's great.

I guess for people who aren't scared of 'other', cowering in their living rooms watching the TV as their only source of "culture" the European project has been a big success.

TV/Radio is our main culture...I know youre trying to deny the existance of the masses, but they are there and they get to vote.

You are more likely to hear of a fireman rescuing a baby in Michigan than a German policeman saving a whole train in Berlin..
We bend towards the States and away from the continent.
No amount of my mates have European friends is going to change that.

That female racing driver injured in Macau yesterday is German. The bloke who just beat Djokovic is German.

You're just a moron who's determined not to accept the (many, many) positive things associated with the EU by sticking your head in the sand and pretending that we hate them and they hate us. Which couldn't be further from the truth.

They dont hate us..wtf are you talking about..we dont hate them..we just ignore them.
There is a massive continent just 20 miles away and youd think it was the other side of the planet.
We sent Farage to represent us ...

You think it's the other side of the planet.

I've been to France two years running, had some friends over from Germany a few weeks back (went to Hannover last year to meet up with them), the o/h has been to France and Belgium this year, my sister's just bought a place in Spain, I work daily with people from Greece, France and Poland. I used to work for a German company, my best friend works for a Danish company.

But yep, my girlfriend works for the Yanks. So we must lean towards them.

Your outlook is so tiny and paltry and limited. I genuinely feel sorry for people like you, to live in a world so big, scary and full of change.

Same here. On the other hand I've only met two Austrians that I know of and they were both absolute twats. Make of that what you will.

Sample of one? Did you read the post?

Everyone I know. All of my large (grandad had at least six kids we know of) family. All my friends have strong cultural ties with europeans (and Indians , as it happens).

I'm challenging your assertion that this isn't common when it is.

It's just the backwards racist spivs who not only don't have those connections, but also don't think is't desireable.

You're trying to narrow down your argument to something really specific (and utterly irrelevant) to justify your viewpoint.

Your demonstrably wrong argument is that we don't care about Europe, we don't share cultural ties and that's a reason to leave.

Now your argument is - the masses don't watch German shows on TV therefore we should leave Europe.

Your knuckles must give you a lot of gyp. You can get paint-on skin you know...

@Job is actually right that the UK pays little attention to what goes on in Europe unless it affects the UK. Same can be said for most countries though, have seen endless articles commenting how baffled germans and french are about the whole thing, brexit deal agreed, then shat on by UK after agreeing to it, which if they had followed UK politics would have been quite predictable

A lot if this can be attributed to sensationalist stories sell papers, and papers that push sensationalist crap in UK tend to be anti EU leaning and so only publish those kind of stories

That said the argument that because if this the UK should leave the EU is also absurd, i dont know my neighbour very well but im not about to move away because it

Funnily enough, I'm more interested in European news, because they're doing shit, whereas we're just circle jerking about Brexit.
