If by "injuring eleven pretty badly" you actually mean "very mildly injuring 2" then yes, that's what happened.

I'd hate to be injured there. Hate to think what the health care is like.

BBC coverage is just appalling! Changing channels. Not covering what they say they are. Where's the bloody cycling? Beach Volley Ball really??

So is it worth £5m rpughly a medal that the government distribute to these elite sports people. Or could that money be given else where to benefit a greater number of people in these austere times?

Its nice to have a good feeling once every four years but the money could keep swimming pools open or be put into making sport more accessible for more people who might not be brilliant at it but it would make them fitter as they enjoyed it.

The only way this small nation is able to be the same as china or near the usa is because we put so much i to so few people.

£80M a year of lottery money is a *relatively* small amount of money, especially of GDP to make us the second best sporting nation in the world (currently, pending on more Russian judge bribing and China having the unfair advantage of being fucking huge!)

If you look at it from the view that only people who get medals count, rather than all of the work that all of the various sporting bodies, involved athletes and trainers etc. etc. do across the whole spectrum of sport that that £80m is pumped into.

Your view's a bit binary, and not actually reflective of the real picture.

Now don't get me wrong, I've lots of things I think the Olympics are awful for, but £80m of lottery money is definitely not one of them. For a start - nobody is forced to buy lottery tickets, so it's not as if that's coming out of taxation.

People who use the same numbers every week are, we cancelled our works syndicate only because the guy doing it did it online and had forgotten any of the numbers, he cancelled them and destroyed the backups.

Still doesn't mean you're forced to buy tickets.

£80M isn't actually that big a deal and isn't even that big a percentage of overall lottery good causes spending. As I mentioned in an earlier post, there was a wider objective with all this to encourage more exercise and grass roots sport as part of the 2012 spend, and it flat out didn't work because Britain is a nation of indolent lardarses who feel good about themselves by watching elite athletes wearing red white and blue on the telly.

My only slight negative about it would be the concentration of spend into narrow interest groups; I think the joke at the London games was that Britain is only really good at sports that involve sitting down.

No they're not. They're just fucking idiots who aren't man enough to stop gambling on something with odds of 1 in 14,000,000.

It's their choice. Plain and simple.

What a load of faux-offence bollocks.

It's a partisan crowd. Nobody complains if there's booing at football matches so why should the olympics be any different? Is it too damn middle class a tournament for people to show passion?

Show a bit of backbone...

I were about to edit that in with regards to football but i just couldn't be arsed and hoped no one would call me on spewing bullshit. First i thought, yeah but they are booed as a whole team, but then i recall some footballers changing teams and getting lots of hate.

Well, Olympics aren't exactly high brow society-event that requires polite applaud, and yes, the guy could show some backbone and not cry about it, although it might have been a very sensitive moment (all that training for that moment and missing the gold etc). I were going to call em brutes and barbarians, but that's just what soccer fans are.. Let's call it a wash!

If you inspire a couple of thousands of kids to get on a bike or start rowing a boat or something then I'd say it's also financially worth it in the sense of NHS etc.
