I was in Rio in...early 2007 (Carnival). As far as I'm aware its only got worse since then. I met a girl in Argentina who'd been mugged at gunpoint in Rio, and she reckoned she was one of many staying at her hostel. I was lucky in a way that I was hanging out with a local for most of my time there so I got decent advice. Most surprising thing to me was that the ATMs close at 9PM to stop people being dragged at gunpoint to the machines to empty their accounts (this happened to some Irish lads when I was in La Paz in Bolivia a few months later).

When I went in 97 I had an armed guard. Would not let me out on the street alone. Seemed like a pain in the butt at the time but after watching the local BAe rep get mugged about 10m from the hotel entrance I moaned less. Outside of Rio it is very different. I went to Sao Paulo and San Jose Dos Campos and had a great time there.

from yesterday... :(

They should replace that Christ statue with a policeman cutout like they have in poundland.

What actually happens is people think "wanker" and then ignore what you've written.

It takes literally seconds to post a link - and why wouldn't you want to do that for the people on the forum you've chosen to spend time with?

Wherever you read the information (assuming it was on the internet), just copy the link. You don't even have to go looking for it.

If you post a link to a video with someone breaking a leg, please put in in spoiler tags so there's no preview.

Not entirely sure why people are so desperate to see some poor fucker possibly end his career.

Because it's incredibly difficult to make out the grizzly details when viewing the video from all the way up there on the moral high ground.

Well, it is the moral high ground after all. You could always go watch a clip from Sweden's Henrik Larsson breaking his leg when playing for Celtic. That's grizzly.

The Olympics is getting to be a joke, rugby, football, volleyball, hockey, boxing, these are not elite disciplines.
You watch someone winning the Rugby and you are hardly convinced they are the best in the world.
Most of the boxing competitors wouldn't last 2 mins in the real world.
They should go back to the core , athletics, swimming, diving, discus.etc.
Oh and do it naked.
Beach volleyball ffs.

Boxing has been in the Olympics early on in the modern games and certainly fits with the ethos (wrestling was part of the original), and plenty of Olympic boxers have gone on to do rather well as professionals, not least one Mr. Cassius Clay.

Oh and when the modern Olympics was started, it featured such classic sporting disciplines as Croquet and Golf. They also used to run an unofficial list of games which sound absolutely awesome. At Paris in 1900 they had:
  • Angling
  • Ballooning
  • Boules
  • Cannon shooting
  • Fire fighting
  • Kite flying
  • Life saving
  • Longue paume
  • Motor racing
  • Motorcycle racing
  • Pigeon racing
  • Water motorsports

I for one would pay good money to see a bit of competitive cannon shooting.

Yeah the modern olympics, it's just got a bit silly now.
