Now those people are what I'm talking about. Get in there, do the job for a few minutes and get out before you hit fatal radiation dose.
Everyone involved in the cleanup was titled a "liquidator" and eligible to claim maximum benefits and pensions. And now Ukraine pull this stunt...
Ukraine's Chernobyl cleanup workers protest planned benefit cuts - Monsters and Critics

What a pisstake that is, those people risked everything to stop a disaster from being much worse and now thier own country want to give them the shaft? Disgusting.

Hai Scouse mate, you've gone very quiet.

Been away most of the week and most of the weekend. Managed to have the same old argument with Toht over in the religion = bullshit thread tho.

I'll post against you silly foo's when I get back from slavery time tomorrow :)

But you will admit that despite an 8.9 earthquake, a huge tsunami, several explosions and loss of cooling systems these reactors didn't cause a global catastrophe. I suppose you will also concede that there is probably a tiny chance of there ever being a problem where reactors are built in stable regions and that we have little choice but to use them.

Isn't shale gas going to make them irrelevant for a few decades ?

Well, it might for a fairly short time. Its a finite source though, its still delaying the inevitable.

Fusion reactors will be the next major stop and will hopefully give us enough time to come up with something else.

Its a finite source that's good for about 300 years. Unfortunately shale gas makes the economics of nuclear look poor, and if things pan out as expected, shale gas also stacks up well as a strategic energy source because its found in lots of countries, not just ones that like to hold an economic gun to your head like Russia. On the other hand, any western government with half a brain should be diversifying energy supply as much as possible, but Fukushima will probably take nuclear completely off the table in the EU, the largest community of NIMBYS on the planet. The only hope for nuclear in Europe is that shale is still a C02 emitter.

With respect I think that's nonsense. France is more than happy with nuclear, and in the UK about eight sites have been identified for new power stations. Most of Germany's power comes from coal, and they want to phase out all nuclear power, so they're clearly idiots. Even Italy is building new nuclear stations.

Economic considerations will always come before political ones.

fusion has got to be the ultimate source, really. the fuel is found in seawater and the byproducts are safe.

The idea of fusion power is great, the reality of it is crap since the same problem of using more power than it generates has been around some time now.

Aye and there doesn't look like any viable ideas to get around that problem.

Well the Sun is a giant fusion reaction so why not harness that ?

Not solar power as that is crap. How's about a huge solar panel in close-ish orbit round the Sun which focuses a narrow laser back at some specialised collection point on Earth. Could double as a weapon if 'mis-directed' :)

We could use geothermal energy from the core - the slight downside is if you use too much the core solidifies and we lose our magnetic shield and most life on the planets wiped out but it doesnt produce any CO2 :p

I was so looking forward to Scouse's back peddling too, seems he has abandoned the thread though :(

He gets a lot of that article spot-on though. The need for a grid. The pumped-storage problem of renewables. The safety of nuclear.

Even green loons are on our side :)

It's not his face that's the problem, it's the self-righteous, condescending and conceited smile at the end of every sentence. Oh, and he appears to be an interupter; the most annoying type of person.

Monbiot converted to pro-nuclear at least a couple of years ago, as the best option for reducing CO2 emissions.

Monibot did indeed convert a couple of years ago. Tom's right - he's a twat - and the fact that he's now dressing it up as a reaction to Japan's nuclear crisis adds more weight to that view.

Anyway. Tokyo, quite some distance away eh? "Safe" or not - how many of you freddies with gorgeous little darlings would pour them a glass and watch them drink?

Hand on heart now, mind.

Personally, I'd put 'em all on a drip. I hate kids ;)

Not the question I asked G :)

A big part of the argument here seems to be that there's "no problem" and that the levels of radiation are pathetically small - so small that nobody should be worried and there's no real problem, not really.

So baby G gonna drink?
